Murder-Suicide in Fond du Lac County

1/10/09 - Fond du Lac County authorities had little time to react during a murder-suicide at a Town of Eldorado residence yesterday morning. 48-year-old Kurt Hinkley shot his wife and then himself on the front walk at the home on Townhall Road. Prior to the shooting Hinkley had armed himself with a handgun and would not let his wife go. Deputies arrived and set up a perimeter. Sheriff Mick Fink says a deputy asked Hinkley to put the gun down seconds before the shooting. He says there was no time to react. Fink says they had previous dealings at the address arresting Hinkley last November on a disorderly conduct charge. The couple’s three year-old daughter was inside the home during the shooting, but wasn’t harmed. Fink says another child was in school at the time of the shooting. He says no deputies fired there weapons or were injured during the incident.

And, by Tuesday the entire state of Wisconsin could be hit by dangerously cold temperatures. Forecasters are warning lows could reach 13 degrees below zero in northern Wisconsin Tuesday night -- even colder by Wednesday.

The Dodge County Sheriffs Department says one of their deputies came across a vehicle that appeared out of gas on Highway 33 and County Trunk A around 3:15 this morning. The man driving the car identified himself as a 32-year-old man. He was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. On top of arresting the man for driving under the influence he is also facing charges of identity theft and obstruction of justice. The man was taken and booked at the Dodge County Jail.

Minimum Wage Bill 1st to be Introduced

1/10/09 - The first bill to be introduced in the state Senate this year would raise Wisconsin's minimum wage. Wayne Corey with Wisconsin Independent Businesses says the group has plenty of respect for the bill's author, Senate Majority Leader Russ Decker, but not so much for this idea. He says this is a very bad time in Wisconsin to do something like this. Senate Bill One would increase the minimum wage from six dollars, 50 cents to 7-60 an hour, then index it for inflation.

Obey Says State Can’t Be Greedy with Stimulus Package

1/10/09 - As states continue to offer long lists of projects they'd like to see funded through a federal stimulus package, Wisconsin Congressman Dave Obey warns against getting too greedy. Obey says now is "not the time to be lining up at the goodies bar asking what's in it for us." He says it's time to realize the nation is in trouble and Congress needs to take the most effective steps possible to help revive the economy. Obey says that means focusing on job creation and ways to increase consumer spending. The Wausau Democrat says lawmakers need to act quickly, and avoid drawing out the approval process. Despite that, Obey says it's unlikely a stimulus package can be approved in time for President-elect Obama to act on right after he's sworn into office. He says it's far too complicated to hope for something before mid-February.
