Simek was held by a security harness, but it was connected to the tree, so it didn't prevent the fall.

It had its headquarters in the Twin Cities.
DOT Holds Freeway Meeting This Week in BD
7/12/09 - Officials with the state Department of Transportation are holding a second public information meeting this week to discuss plans to convert Highway 151 between Columbus and Waupun from an expressway to a freeway. An expressway allows drivers to access it from side roads or driveways while a freeway can only be accessed by ramps and interchanges. During this second meeting, the DOT will display preliminary roadway concepts for the conversion to a freeway. The project is in the first of three phases and there is no immediate construction planned. The public meeting will be held Wednesday at the Beaver Dam American Legion from 5pm to 7pm with a presentation at 5:30pm.

Taxpayers mailing after the deadline are subject to interest and a penalty of ten point five percent (10.5%).

Milwaukee Mile Moves Forward With Operator Search
7/12/09 - The Wisconsin State Fair Park Board needs a new operator for the Milwaukee Mile. Wisconsin Motorsports is out. Claude Napier gave the board permission to find a new race promotor, according to a Friday announcement. Napier had been running the historic race track since February. The Wisconsin Motorsports office had closed more than a week ago, with a dozen staff members laid off. Napier apparently wasn't able to find the investors he needed to keep the operation going.
Silver Lining in Failed GM Relocation Bid
7/12/09 - Wisconsin lost its bid to entice General Motors to locate its new small car plant here. The head of the Wisconsin Technology Council says that might turn out to be a "win" in the long run. Though the state's new budget includes millions of dollars in tax increases, it also includes incentives for investment, research and development. The tax breaks were put in the budget as a part of the effort to keep GM in Janesville. Those tax breaks, the state officials say, will hopefully lead other businesses to stay in the Badger State -- or expand their operations here. Other than that, there's very little good about losing 12 hundred Janesville jobs when that plant closed.
Obama Bucks Target Homelessness in Milwaukee
7/12/09 - Three local governments in southeast Wisconsin will get more than eight million dollars in federal stimulus funding to fight the homeless problem. The bulk of the money -- nearly seven million dollars -- goes to the city of Milwaukee. Milwaukee County and West Allis share the rest. The funding comes as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. It will be used for the prevention of homelessness, and to find housing for families which lose their places to live. The grants are not for mortgage assistance. They are designed to offer short-term help, lasting no more than 18 months. Payments will go to third parties, like landlords or utility companies, and not to the families directly.
Bear Shooting Defended
7/12/09 - State wildlife officials defend their decision to shoot a cornered bear in La Crosse last month. The 300 pound black bear entered Myrick Park June 27. A crowd of people followed it, using video cameras, as the animal climbed a tree. Wisconsin wildlife officials say that crowd ignored orders to disperse. As the bear became more agitated, it looked like it was going to come out of the tree -- and the officers say they had to open fire to keep the public safe. There were some complaints. Witnesses said the bear should have been tranquilized. One bear expert says that wasn't an option because the tranquilizers can take up to 15 minutes to work. The bear could have been dangerous while it was taking effect.
Another 100 Year Flood Predicted
7/12/09 - Southwest Wisconsin seems to have escaped flooding so far this year, but a recent discussion casts new light on those 100-year floods the region experienced two years in a row. Following the flooding of the Red River in 1997, Dr. Will Gosnold and colleagues looked into the standard governmental flood frequency data. He says that research showed a large spread of frequency for a flood of that magnitude, prompting them to question the reality of a so-called 100-year flood. Dr. Gosnold then examined the underlying assumptions, and was astonished to find the first one is that climate does not change. With further research he found the climate has been changing, from a wet, cold climate in the 1800s to a wetter, warmer climate today. Gosnold says the result is that those 100-year-floods may be occurring more often than every century.
