Primary Election DayBeaver Dam Lake Launch Fee Increased

2/16/10 - It’s primary election day in Wisconsin – and voters will narrow the fields for a host of local-and-regional positions. In our area there are mayoral primaries in Waupun and Juneau, aldermanic races in Mayville and Fox Lake, and school board contests in Waupun and Fall River. There’s also a three-way primary for the state’s Fourth District Court of Appeals, which hears cases in 24 counties including Dodge, Columbia, and Jefferson. The polls are open from seven this morning until eight tonight.

No Referendum in April for BD Schools

2/16/10 - Beaver Dam School District residents won’t see a referendum on their ballot in April. That’s after the board effectively tabled the idea by taking no action at their meeting last night. District Administrators had recommended going to referendum to ask for around $15-million to help pay for a number of deferred maintenance projects. But board members continued to have concerns about the cost of the referendum, the future of the outlying schools, and the lack of community input. Board member Marge Jorgensen says by delaying any type of referendum it will allow the board more time to determine what the community wants. Another board member, Dan Feuling, says he believes the district will still need to go to referendum but the delay will allow them to present a better plan to voters. Steve Vessey, who will take over as Superintendent in July says the board knows the district has some real facilities needs that are not going away and he is confident they’ll address them after more planning. That process is expected to start tomorrow when the board gets together and discusses, among other topics, putting together a long-range facilities plan.

Robbery Suspect Killed by Police

2/16/10 - Suburban Milwaukee authorities expect to say more today about a police shoot-out that killed a man who allegedly robbed a video game store. Fox Point Police were called to the Game Stop shortly after six last night. A short time later, Fox Point officers found the suspect on a street in Glendale – and they said the robber opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, and the robber died at the scene of an apparent gunshot wound. No officers were hurt. Other details were not immediately released. The Game Stop in Beaver Dam was robbed late last month. At the time authorities said they were trying to determine whether that robbery was related to a other ones at Game Stops around southern Wisconsin.

2/16/10 - It now costs two dollars more to take a boat onto Beaver Dam Lake. The Common Council last night voted 11 to 1 to increase the boat launch fee from $3 to $5. The annual fee will remain unchanged with city residents continuing to pay $20 and non-residents paying $30. Mark Born with the Lake Improvement Association says the additional money will be used to pay the costs associated with lake stocking, aeration, erosion control and education. He says the money will also be necessary to help the Association in their efforts to have the DNR designate the lake as “impaired.” Born also says the thinking of the Association is that $5 is quickly becoming the average lake access charge across the state, and the two dollar increase will keep the Association from having to request another increase for maybe a decade or longer. The last time launch fees were increased was 10 years ago. Alderman Laine Meyer cast the only dissenting vote. He said in committee that the economy has driven down boat registrations and an increase in launch fees does not help. Meyer said he would have been more comfortable with a one dollar increase.

Administrative Committee Reviews CIP

2/16/10 - Beaver Dam city officials will hold a joint meeting of the Administrative and Operations committees next week to review the five-year Capital Improvements Plan. The CIP is a short-range plan that details major building projects and equipment purchases while also identifying options for funding. The Administrative Committee last night discussed the inclusion of a new $5 million Police Department in the CIP. Alderman John Litscher questioned if money for the project should be borrowed even though it hasn’t been approved by the full council. There was also debate as to whether it would be cheaper to borrow the roughly $8 million needed over the next two years all at once to take advantage of low-interest rates. The Administrative Committee wanted to get input from the Operations Committee before moving forward, and the joint meeting is scheduled for next week Wednesday at 6pm.

BDCC Approves Third Street Extension

2/16/10 - The Beaver Dam Common Council last night approved a 130 foot extension of Third Street to accommodate for future development of the old Lakeview Hospital. A developer is interested in turning the shuttered hospital into an assisted living facility. Gene Kirschbaum is in the process of purchasing the building from Dick Powell, and has an option to purchase the property, dependent on city council actions related to the street extension and other zoning matters.

Utility Bills Lower Than Last Year

2/16/10 - Utility bills for Wisconsin Power and Light customers were 15-percent lower on average last month than during the same period in 2009. That’s according the most recent numbers released by Alliant Energy, who says the decline resulted in a difference of nearly 30-dollars. The same numbers say WPL natural gas customers have also saw a decline in winter heating costs so far this year. From October through January the average customer saw a 25-percent drop in their bill when compared to the same time period last winter. That resulted in a difference of more than 145-dollars.this year. WPL serves much of northern Dodge County as well as parts of Columbia, Green Lake, and Fond du Lac Counties.

2/16/10 - Two people were arrested for fighting outside a Beaver Dam tavern early Sunday morning. Deputy Police Chief Dan Schubert tells us that officers were called to a report of a fight-in-progress at the parking lot outside Johnny’s Lounge at 2:12am. A 30-year-old Beaver Dam man was arrested on charges of Disorderly Conduct, Resisting Arrest and Possession of Cocaine.
