Nehls will Run for Re-Election Council Approves Bond Sale

5/4/10 - Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls says he will run for a third term this fall. Originally elected in 2002, Nehls will be looking for another four year term. In a press release announcing his candidacy, Nehls touted the transformation of the department under his leadership, including going from a reactive mode of law enforcement to being proactive. He also stated that in six of his seven years in office the department has had a budget surplus that totaled nearly 4-million-dollars. Currently, there are no other declared candidates

FFRF to Protest National Day of Prayer

5/4/10 - The same group that threatened legal action against Dodge County if they continued to have a prayer at the beginning of their board meetings will hold a rally at the State Capitol on Thursday, to protest government observances of the National Day of Prayer. The Freedom from Religion Foundation recently convinced Federal Judge Barbara Crabb to rule the day unconstitutional – a ruling the Obama White House is appealing. Judge Crabb said the prayer day violates the First Amendment’s ban on government-endorsed religion. But she said her ruling would not be enforced until all appeals are exhausted. The Dodge County Board now has a voluntary invocation before the meeting is called to order.

Farmers Ahead of Schedule

5/4/10 - Wisconsin farmers continue to get their crops in the ground much earlier than normal, even though it rained a little last week. Just over half of the Badger State’s corn is planted. That’s 31-percent more than a week ago, and 30 points ahead of the average for the past five years. 92-percent of the oats are planted, and 60-percent have emerged. 29-percent of soils statewide are short-or-very-short of moisture, while 63-percent is adequate. North central Wisconsin is the driest. Two-thirds of the fields there are said to be short-or-very-short on moisture.

5/4/10 - The Beaver Dam Common Council last night approved the sale of $3.7 million in bonds to fund a variety of projects. The city’s financial advisor Carol Wirth says $1 million will be used to fund incentives for Mayville Engineering Company in the new TIF #4. The remaining $2.6 million will be used for a variety of 2010 capital improvement projects, including a portion of the new police station. Wirth says last night’s action was for short term borrowing and is the first of two phases. The city will lock in interest rates next month, when the council meets again to approve long-term borrowing. Wirth says the second phase removes the restriction of spending the money on specific capital projects. In addition, the city recently secured an improved bond rating, which is resulting in a better interest rate over the period of the loan. The common council last night also approved the hiring of MSA Integrated Project Delivery as the project manager for the new police station. MSA’s Marty Sell says they have a very aggressive timeline planned. They plan is to have council approve bids by mid-September with construction beginning in early October, a building frame by December and substantial completion by July of next year. MSA was hired at a cost not to exceed $224,000.

Animart Secures Business Park Land

5/4/10 - The Beaver Dam Common Council last night approved the sale of eight acres of land to Animart for a new distribution center. The Beaver Dam-based company has outgrown their current distribution center on Green Valley Road, and plans are to construct a 50,000 square foot facility. The purchase price is $15,000 per acre. Animart’s distribution center primarily handles agricultural animal products. The new facility is not expected to have any impact on Animart’s retail pet store on North Spring Street. If all goes according to plan, ground could be broken this summer.

BDPD Provides Bar Update

5/4/10 - The Beaver Dam Administrative Committee last night received a quarterly update from the police department on calls for service to local bars. Lt. John Kreuziger says the police chief recently assessed 50 points against Johnny’s Lounge for noise violations, under the recently adopted demerit point system. Kreuziger says both a bartender and the manager were cited after an initial warning. He says the establishment has implemented corrective measures and has been in compliance for the past three weeks. Kreuziger also says officers were recently dispatched to The Cellar, where a patron allegedly threw a pitcher of beer at a car. There was also said to be beer bottles and broken glass outside the establishment. Kreuziger says management is being very cooperative and the chief is reviewing the matter.

Hinkley Has Initial Appearance

5/4/10 - A Beaver Dam man accused of assaulting a young teen had a signature bond set at $1000 Monday. Robert Hinkley Jr. is charged with one felony count of Second Degree Sexual Assault of a Child. The 18-year-old Hinkley and another man allegedly assaulted the young teen last month. 19-year-old Christopher Bowers was arraigned on Friday; Bowers stood mute and had a “not guilty” plea entered on his behalf. The two reportedly removed several “missing person’s posters” with the juvenile’s age listed. During yesterday’s initial hearing, Hinkley was ordered to have no contact with females under 17, with the exception of immediate family. A preliminary hearing is set for June 17. Bowers is being held on a $10,000 cash bond and has court activity on the calendar later this month.

‘Veterans: The True American Idol’

5/4/10 - Organizers with the Beaver Dam Memorial Day 2010 Parade have announced the theme for this year’s event. Organizer Lois Levenhagen says the theme this year is “Veteran: The True American Idol.” Levenhagen says the committee encourages all service organizations, bands, schools, scouts and churches to enter a float or marching group and incorporate the theme. The parade will be held on Monday, May 31 and is being sponsored by the American Legion Post #146. Levenhagen says the parade route will be slightly different this year because of construction in the Tower Parking lot. It will be starting at Front and Spring Street and then proceed down Front Street/ Park Avenue to Veterans Memorial Park at Oakwood Cemetery.
