Veterans Day Tribute Aired This Afternoon

11/11/10 - WBEV will be dedicating our programming this afternoon to the men and women of our armed forces who have fought bravely to defend this county. We’ll be broadcasting live from the Beaver Dam American Legion for the fourth straight year, turning over the microphone to local veterans from all branches of the service who unselfishly defended this country during times of war. We’ll also be hearing from those loved ones on the home front who held down the fort while their spouse or parent was fighting for our freedom. In addition, all area veterans are encouraged to go down to the American Legion Building and take a minute to share your stories with our listeners. The special Veterans Day Tribute begins on WBEV 1430AM beginning at 12:35pm.

Mayville PD: MacNeill To Replace Linzenmeyer

11/11/10 - City officials in Mayville do not plan on finding a permanent replacement for outgoing Police Chief Bill Linzenmeyer. The Common Council this week accepted his resignation effective June 30, 2011. Mayor Jerry Moede says the plan is to save taxpayers some money making Captain Chris MacNeill the acting or interim chief. Moede says MacNeill suggested the new structure but says another patrolman may need to be hired. There are currently six patrolmen on the beat in Mayville after two officers were cut as a money-saving measure last year. Linzenmeyer has been with the department for 36 years.

Libecki Convicted In 1999 Murder

11/11/10 - A jury in Washington County found a former factory worker from Theresa guilty yesterday of killing a female co-worker in 1999. It took a jury just over three hours to convict Mark Libecki of First Degree Intentional Homicide in the murder of 22-year-old Theresa Weselowski of Milwaukee. Libecki was arrested just over a year ago after his D-N-A was found on the victim but the 49-year-old Libecki testified this week that he was pulling the woman from the back-seat of his S-U-V as another co-worker attacked her with a knife. The three were employed at the Smurfit-Stone Container factory in Germantown. Libecki has a sentencing hearing scheduled in February.

Man Accused of Selling Rented Skidsteer

11/11/10 - A South Beloit man faces a felony charge of Theft By False Representation for allegedly selling a skidsteer that he had rented. Daniel Lyman reportedly obtained the machinery from a Madison business and then advertised it on craigslist. According to the criminal complaint, Lyman sold the skidsteer to a Columbus man for $12,000 then went to a casino. If convicted, the 29-year-old could spend up to ten years in prison. Lyman, who is currently incarcerated at Winnebago County Jail in Rockford, had a cash bond set at $500 on Monday, then waived his right to a preliminary hearing. A jury trial is set for January 19.

Dutzle Sentenced In Burglaries

11/11/10 - A Beaver Dam man will spend six months in jail for a pair of burglaries in Mayville. 19-year-old Andrew Dutzle stole cash, credit cards, knives and electronics in the two break-ins last May. His 18-year-old brother Devin Dutzle is also charged and will be back in court next week. Andrew Dutzle pleaded “no contest” this week to a felony burglary charge and had two other misdemeanors dismissed but read in. A neighbor witnessed a suspicious vehicle in the area of the break-ins and jotted down the license plate. Authorities connected that to a juvenile accomplice who used a stolen credit card online. Dutzle was also placed on probation for three years.

Four Sites Top BD Senior Center List

11/11/10 - Plans for a new Beaver Dam Senior Center continue to move forward, in spite of a recent setback. The former Herberger’s Department store was ruled out as a location in September after a fundraising feasibility study found a lack of support for the site. Mayor Tom Kennedy told us recently on WBEV’s Community Comment the focus now is on four different sites. That includes the former Fullerton Lumber site on South Center Street, the Warmka property on Dodge Drive and North Spring Street, the Beaver Gunite warehouse and retail store on East Mackie Street and the city-owned property north of the new YMCA of Dodge County. Community Activities and Services Administrator Evonne Koeppen says the Senior Center Building Committee has been working hard identifying space needs that would be versatile enough for the next 40 years. Kennedy says the city’s top priority is having a sound, fiscally responsible plan. Both Kennedy and Koeppen the idea of moving into a new facility in phases is a very real possibility. Kennedy says the taxpayers in Beaver Dam cannot afford to build a new Senior Center outright but there could be some city support to match their fundraising efforts. The recent feasibility study determined that between $500,000 and $800,000 could be raised from private donations.

Waupun Holds Line On Taxes

11/11/10 - Taxpayers in Waupun won’t be seeing an increase to their mill rate, and those in Fond du Lac County will actually see a decrease. The total proposed budget is $6.94-million, a 1.1-percent increase. However, because of an increase in non-tax revenue the mill rate for Waupun residents in Dodge County will stay at $6.19 per thousand, the same as this year. Waupun residents in Fond du Lac County will pay the same $6.19 per thousand, but that’s actually down from the $6.33 per thousand they are paying this year. The council will hold a public hearing on the budget November 30th with a special meeting afterwards, where it’s expected the budget will be approved.

Columbus LED Lights Update

11/11/10 - The Columbus Council will be asked to approve a vendor for L E D Street Light conversion at their next meeting. Bids were opened Monday and costs for the switch to the new L E D technology were lower than anticipated. Utility advisor groups are projecting electric power savings in the range of $10 to $30 thousand dollars per year by converting to the use of L E Ds. With approval Columbus can become one of the first Wisconsin communities to have streets illuminated by the Light Emitting Diode (L E D) technology.

Oshkosh Council Approved Mosque

11/11/10 - The Oshkosh City Council has unanimously approved a Muslim group’s request to convert a funeral home to a mosque. Khurram Ahmad, President of the Oshkosh chapter of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the decision given last minute opposition that sprang up online. He said a further look at the comments on a local newspaper’s website revealed only a few people trying to make “more noise.” Nearby homeowners are concerned about potential traffic and noise at the facility which will be used up to 18 hours a day. Ahmad said they are taking numerous steps to address concerns including setting up a privacy fence on two sides of the property.

41% Asleep At The Wheel

11/11/10 - Forty-one percent of drivers admit they have fallen asleep at the wheel. A new AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety study also showed that 85% of drivers surveyed felt it was “completely unacceptable” for someone to drive if they are so tired they are having trouble keeping their eyes open, yet despite that belief, the study shows those people still drive. A Triple-A Wisconsin spokesperson says younger drivers, aged 16 to 24, are nearly twice as likely to be involved in a drowsy driving crash than older drivers. Men are more at risk than women. The new study comes in time for Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.
