BDUSD Honors Outstanding Alumni, Friends of Education



4/12/10 - The Beaver Dam Unified School District honored an Outstanding Alumni and three Friends of Education during their annual Wall of Fame banquet last night. The Outstanding Alumni was Clarence Keller, a 1921 graduate who went on to be the city’s first full time mayor, guiding Beaver Dam thru five consecutive terms. Longtime board member Laurie Probst was presented with a Friends of Education Award. Those who nominated Probst called her a child advocate who played a key role in improving the learning environment in the district and whose motto is and has always been, “do what’s right for the kids.” Dr. Ayaz Samadani was recognized as a Friend of Education for being a founding member of the Beaver Dam Scholarship Foundation, which has given out $1.8 million since its inception. The Beaver Dam Noon Kiwanis was also named a Friend of Education for providing scholarships, generous donations and leadership opportunities to children in the district. The Wall of Fame recipients will be our guests on WBEV’s Community Comment tomorrow afternoon.



Car Crashed Into Columbus Restaurant



4/12/10 - Six minor injures were reported after a car drove into a restaurant in Columbus last night. Jared Fox with the Columbus Fire Department says the vehicle broke through the west side of the Apple Tree Restaurant on Park Avenue just after 6pm. He says patrons had just left the booth where the vehicle wound up, buried to its windshield. The booth was completely destroyed. Those injured were inside the restaurant; the driver was not injured. It is believed the Chevy passenger car had mechanical problems; Frank Porth towed it from the scene. Two minutes before authorities responded to the Apple Tree crash, they were dispatched to Highway 73 and County Highway D for a motorcycle versus deer accident. The driver sustained injures and was transported to Columbus Community Hospital.

Fatal Train Vs. Pedestrian In Theresa Marsh


4/12/10 - Authorities say their investigation into a man being hit by a freight train Saturday afternoon continues. They say two people were walking along the railroad tracks in the Theresa Marsh when the train came along. One of them jumped from a steep embankment and landed safely, while a 35-year-old Washington County man was hit and killed. The name of the victim has not been released and the incident remains under investigation by the Sheriffs Department and the Canadian National Railroad Police.

Lake Geneva Woman Killed in Accident

4/12/10 - A 20-year-old woman was killed last night after the vehicle she was in rolled over in Lake Mills. Authorities say they were called out to a report of a single-vehicle rollover just after 7pm last night. The driver of the vehicle apparently lost control while taking a left hand turn leaving the road before rolling over. The woman was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Police have not said who was driving the vehicle but do have a Fort Atkinson man in custody. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Conservation Congress to Meet Tonight

4/12/10 - Wisconsin residents will have their chance to nominate and elect representatives to the Wisconsin Conservation Congress tonight in Horicon. Those in attendance will also being able to express their views on congress proposals that someday could become the rules that regulate fishing and hunting among other activities. Tonight's meeting will ask for input on 36-advisory questions including suggestions on enhancing fishing opportunities are the states lakes and rivers, lowering the crossbow eligibility age to 55, and allowing a sports license to be issued for gun or bow deer hunting. The meeting will be held in Horicon at City Hall beginning at 7pm.

Recount in Fall River School Board Race

4/12/10 - A third recount from last Tuesday's election has been scheduled. The Fall River School District has two open spots on their board and four candidates. Incumbent Leroy Dieckhoff was the leading vote getter with 178 and will return. However, there was a tie for the other seat as David Brozak and Steve Bader tied with 150 votes apiece. The recount has been set for 9 a.m. tomorrow morning at the Fall River Village Hall.

Powerball Up to 175M

4/12/10 - The Powerball jackpot is up to 175-million-dollars for the next drawing on Wednesday night. Nobody won the top prize during the weekend. And nobody from Wisconsin won the second prize, either. Wednesday's cash option is 84-million dollars for a single winner who takes the whole prize now instead of in 30 annual installments. Meanwhile, the Mega Millions jackpot is at 105-million-dollars for tomorrow night. Nobody won the top prize last Friday night -- and nobody from the Badger State won the quarter-million-dollar second prize.
