Arson Ruled Out in Town of Trenton Fire
7/10/09 - The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says they have ruled out arson in the fire that destroyed a relocated home Wednesday morning in the Town of Trenton. Sheriff Todd Nehls says they now believe the truck moving the home struck some power lines at the Fond du Lac and Dodge County border which could have interacted with some sparks from the tires. Nehls says the movers failed to apply for the necessary permits and gave no advance notice to authorities that the structure would be moved. The Fox Lake Fire Department was able to save a nearby barn and a couple out buildings but the house on County Road F was a complete loss.
Man Dies at Lazy Days Campground
7/10/09 - Rescuers were too late last evening to save a 40-year-old Town of Farmington man from drowning at the Lazy Days Campground in Washington County. Sheriff's officials inform us Jesse Robert Lewis was in and out of conscious and had stopped breathing when rescuers brought him to shore. Paramedics administered CPR as Lewis was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in West Bend where he died. An autopsy is planned, but at this point authorities believe Lewis death was accidental. (KFIZ)
Concession Stand Break-In
7/10/09 - Another concession stand was broken into in Beaver Dam, that’s the second one this week. The most recent occurred at the Athletic Field concession stand at Gilmore and York Streets and was reported Wednesday morning. Officials with Youth Baseball and Softball of Beaver Dam installed a video surveillance system after a previous break-in earlier this year. Those cameras were stolen along with a supply of candy. Authorities are investigating.
Domestic Partner Registry Puts Burden on County
7/10/09 - Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson says obtaining a domestic partner license will be nearly identical as getting a marriage license. But there is a big difference when trying to terminate the license. Unlike a marriage, which must go through court to be dissolved, a domestic partnership will terminated through Gibson’s office. The new domestic partner registry started July 1st as a result of the new budget passing. The license will allow same-sex couples some of the same benefits that married people have, including being able to transfer property and having the right not to testify against a partner in court.
Natural Gas Prices Stay Low
7/10/09 - Remember the doomsday predictions from a year ago, when winter heating bills were supposed to rise 50-percent from the previous year? Well, they didn’t rise. And Wisconsinites who heat with natural gas actually paid about three-percent less than the winter before. Now, fuel prices are at their lowest in seven years – and utilities are stashing away record amounts with the hopes of keeping costs down again this heating season. Brian Manthey of We Energies says there are no guarantees. But he says the situation is a lot more encouraging than last summer, when natural gas prices were almost at record highs on the New York Mercantile Exchange. This week, the Energy Information Administration said natural gas prices in the Upper Midwest would most likely be lower from October through March than the previous winter. The agency cited the poor economy – plus the fact that gas production is increasing. Of course, experts say the weather could still put a monkey-wrench into those forecasts.
Tuition Increase for UW Students
7/10/09 - The U-W’s four-year campuses will raise their tuition by five-and-a-half percent this fall. But low-to-middle income students will get enough new grants to avoid the increase, under a budget passed yesterday by the Board of Regents. The panel approved a two-point-two-billion-dollar spending package on a voice vote. It also includes an average increase of five-point-three percent for room-and-board and student fees for things like dorm improvements. Tuition at the two-year U-W colleges will not rise. The idea is to keep the schools affordable, and make the fees competitive with technical colleges.
Insurance Companies Forced to Pay for Contraceptives
7/10/09 - Wisconsin’s health insurance companies will have to pay for contraceptives under the new state budget. And family planning services like birth control and tests for sexually-transmitted diseases will be given to men as well as women in state health programs. Also, the budget makes Wisconsin pharmacies always have someone available to dispense contraceptives. But Karla Ashenhurst of Ministry Health Care says it’s still not clear if pharmacies must stock contraceptives. And her group – which includes religious hospitals – says it will wait for more guidance.
Doyle Meets with Chrysler CEO
7/10/09 - Governor Jim Doyle met with Chrysler’s C-E-O yesterday about the possibility of keeping the Kenosha engine plant open. The governor’s office confirms that Doyle went to Chrysler’s headquarters in Auburn Hills Michigan. But it would not say much else about Doyle’s meeting with Sergio Marchionne. Chrysler’s new owner, Fiat, has until the end of this month to decide if it wants to exercise an option to buy the Kenosha plant. When it first filed for bankruptcy, Chrysler said it would close the facility by the end of next year – putting about 800 people out of work. But the bankruptcy plan does not require the automaker to close Kenosha, and state leaders have been trying ever since to get Chrysler to change its mind. They have especially criticized the company’s plans to build a new engine plant in Mexico to produce the same type of V-6 engines which Chrysler had earlier planned to build in Kenosha.
Public Enemies Vehicles Being Featured in Waupaca County
7/10/09 - You don’t have to watch “Public Enemies” to see the classic 1930’s cars that were featured in the Johnny Depp movie. Forty-one of those vehicles are on display this weekend at the Iola Old Car Show and Swap Meet at Iola in Waupaca County. Wisconsinites provided quite a few of those vehicles. Chris Gundrum of West Bend was there to show off his 1930 Ford Model “A.” He said he whooped with delight when he saw his car right behind Depp’s vehicle in the first minute of the film – which is about Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger. This is the 37th year of the Iola show, which normally attracts up to 150-thousand people over four days. It runs through Sunday. This year’s theme is “Independents and Imports, Alternatives to the Detroit Three.” Hudsons and Studebakers are among the featured vehicles.

7/10/09 - At Beaver Dam Lake Days tonight it’s the annual Door County Style Fish Boil. There is a $5 cover charge unless you purchase tickets in advance, in which case entry is free. Kids 10 and under are also free. On stage tonight are The Nines and The Toys.
If you’re looking for something to do this weekend outside of Lake Days there are a number of other area events. In Fox Lake, it’s the second week of their Concerts in the Park series. The concerts, which are free, are held at Fox Lake Town Park and begin at 7:30 every Friday through August 7th. Also tonight, the “KIDS” From Wisconsin will perform in the Mayville High School Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased at the Mayville Savings bank. That concert starts at 7 p.m. as well.
