Man Injured After Striking Deer
7/3/09 - A 52-year-old man was seriously injured after striking a deer with his vehicle yesterday afternoon. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says David B. Sauder struck a deer on Highway O in the Town of Ashippun just before 5 p.m. Sauder was flighted to the hospital with what authorities called serious injuries. There was no immediate word on his condition.
Beaver Dam River Flowing Freely After Removal of Culverts
7/3/09 - The culverts have been removed from the Tower Parking Lot and, for the first time in decades, the water is moving freely downstream of the dam in downtown Beaver Dam. Mayor Tom Kennedy says the east side of the bank was shaped and rip-rapped last week and the west side is being addressed now. Beaver Dam was awarded $3.7 million dollars in Community Development Block Grant funds to cover virtually all of the costs associated with the demolition project. That includes the purchase and demolition of ten buildings, removal of the culverts in the Tower Parking lot and façade improvements to the front and back of 14 affected businesses project. Phase two of the plan uses $1 million in grants for beautification, treating of the exposed brick and bridge installation in the Tower Parking lot. It was originally slated for next year but Kennedy says the grant announcement will allow some of those phase two projects to be completed this year. Kennedy says with the culverts out, the river looks bigger and more massive than he thought it would.
Dodge County Foreclosures Hold Steady in June
7/3/09 - Home foreclosures in Wisconsin jumped another 12-percent in June. The Madison research firm of Foreclosure Alarm said there were 24-hundred-60 court filings in June against homeowners who got behind on their mortgages. That’s up from 22-hundred filings in May. In Dodge County the rate stayed the same with 35 foreclosures being filed in May and June. Jefferson County saw an increase over the two month period from 32 to 35. Fond du Lac decreased from 35 in May to 26 in June and Columbia County dropped 10 foreclosures to 23 in June. The company’s founder, Philip Crawford, said the trends have been relatively consistent statewide. He says the drop in housing values has caused more people to walk away, once they find they have negative equity. Job losses are another factor, as the state’s unemployment rate is almost twice what it was just a few years ago.
Davison Bound Over for Trial on Molestation Charges
7/3/09 - A Lomira man accused of molesting a pre-school age child was bound over for trial yesterday in Dodge County court. Judge John Storck found probable cause to move forward with the case of Ryan D. Davison, who is also charged with possession of child pornography. The 31-year-old was arrested in connection with an online sting operation conducted by the New Waterford Police Department in the state of Ohio. The police chief there posed as the mother of a 13-year-old girl on an incest website. Chief Daniel Haueter reportedly traded explicit photographs and videos with Davison as they arranged a meeting. Davison was arrested after he sent an image to the undercover agent by cell phone. According to the criminal complaint, Davison admitted that he took some of the pictures and received others in online trades. When asked if he thought it was wrong to possess the images, Davidson agreed adding, “I know the judge will probably throw the book at me.” He faces a maximum sentence of 85 years in prison if convicted. Davison will be back in court for an arraignment hearing on August 13. He is being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
Doud Gets Probation
7/3/09 - A teenager, who escaped from a facility for at-risk juveniles and later led authorities in Dodge County on a high speed chase in a stolen vehicle, has been sentenced to probation. Timothy Doud of Jefferson pleaded “no contest” to a felony charge of Fleeing an Officer and had two misdemeanors dismissed but read into the record. The 17-year-old and another teen left the Rawhide Boys Ranch in New London to visit friends in Jefferson County when Horicon Police officers attempted to stop their vehicle. The chase began in Horicon and ended in the Waupun High School parking lot and at times reached over 100mph. During the pursuit, Doud managed to avoid road-spikes and later entered the ditch and rammed a Horicon squad car while getting out. In total, three squad cars were damaged; two from Horicon and one from the sheriff’s department. In addition to three years probation, Doud had his license revoked for one year. A restitution hearing will be held in August.

7/3/09 - There could be a legal challenge to the state's domestic partner registry. As part of the recently signed state budget, county clerks will soon have to offer a domestic partner registry to same sex couples around Wisconsin. Not so fast says Julaine Appling of the Wisconsin Family Council. She says a legal challenge is being looked at. Appling claims the budget language violates the 2006 Constitutional Amendment banning gay marriage and any similar "union" sanctioned by the state. But Scott Ross with One Wisconsin Now says Appling and other proponents claimed the amendment would not ban what the state is now doing. The registry is to be made available by August 3rd, assuming legal action doesn't delay it. The budget language provides inheritance and visitation rights for same sex couples.
Fewer Unplanned Pregnancies Lead to Fewer Abortions
7/3/09 - Fewer Wisconsin abortions are due to fewer unplanned pregnancies, according to Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin. The group attributes a five-year decline in abortions in Wisconsin to laws providing education and contraception such as BadgerCare, Compassionate Care for Rape Victims Act and Prevention First initiatives. Nicole Safar, Legal and Policy Analyst for the group, says there's still a lot of work to do in education and contraception access. Those on the other side of the abortion issue attribute the drop in the procedures to women under 30 being more "pro-life" than their predecessors. However, Safar says their polling shows this demographic, which account for the highest group of unplanned pregnancies, believe in keeping abortion legal.
Acker Told to Stay Away from Children While Awaiting Trial
7/3/09 - Former West Allis swim coach Daniel Acker has to stay away from children under the age of 18 until he goes on trial in October. Acker is charged with several sex crimes against children. He's free on 100 thousand dollars bail. Acker was arrested last March while he was coaching youth swimmers at Frank Lloyd Middle School. Earlier that same day a man in his 40s told police Acker had sexually assaulted him more than 30 years ago. He faces at least five felonies, but prosecutors say other charges couldn't be filed because the statute of limitations had expired.
Waupun Establishment Settles Tax Issues
7/3/09 - Spirits Bar and Restaurant is back open after resolving tax issues with the state of Wisconsin. The Department of Revenue Compliance Bureau sent a letter to Waupun City Clerk Kyle Clark earlier this year informing him that owner Dan Ganz did not hold a valid seller’s permit and the state would not be issuing a new permit until all of his tax matters had been resolved. In June, the city council approved granting Ganz a license contingent on him resolving the tax matters with the state by Tuesday. Ganz missed that deadline and was unable to open for lunch Wednesday. However, by later that afternoon he was able to take care of the issues with the department of revenue and was back open for business Wednesday night.
Group to Hold Rally in Mayville Tomorrow
7/3/09 - Residents are invited to a TEA Party Rally in Mayville on the 4th of July. TEA stands for Taxed Enough Already. The event will be held in Foster Park, in downtown Mayville, at 1:30 Saturday afternoon. It will be held in front of the White Limestone Schoolhouse and will include patriotic sing-along, brief inspirational speeches, and more. Over 1,200 TEA Party rallies are scheduled across the nation on the 4th. Similar rallies were held on Tax Day this past April including one that was held in Fond du Lac. (KFIZ)
