Kraemer Attempts to Reassure Council

11/15/09 - Columbus City Administrator Boyd Kraemer has reassured the Council that the City is in a good financial position regarding their $4.8 million dollar debt borrowing limit...the amount the City can legally borrow. Kraemer said the amount is just slightly over half of what the City’s legal limit is. Kraemer went on to say the amount of tax levy money budgeted to retire City debt in Columbus has remained at a fairly constant level. The proposed Columbus 2010 budget is likely to be passed by resolution at Tuesday’s Common Council session.

Mayor to Run for Governor

11/15/09 - Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has confirmed he will run for Wisconsin governor. The official announcement comes at a noon news conference today. Barrett told reporters yesterday he had delayed making his decision until he was sure he had recovered from the incident three months ago that left him with head injuries and a damaged hand. Barrett reportedly has about 800 thousand dollars in campaign money -- slightly less than the amount reportedly held now by Republican Scott Walker. Barrett got a lot of attention after the August incident where he defended a woman outside the Wisconsin State Fairgrounds. He says he will run on the issues of jobs, education and the economy.

Nearly 1,000 Honor Fallen Kiel Soldier

11/15/09 - Major General Richard Stone says Staff Sergeant Amy Krueger represented everything good and right with America. Stone eulogized the Wisconsin soldier at a funeral service in Kiel Saturday. He called Krueger a model soldier, saying she died protecting American freedom. An estimated crowd of a thousand showed up to honor Krueger. She was killed in the November 5th shooting rampage at Fort Hood in Texas. Krueger was getting ready for her second deployment to Afghanistan. She served under Stone when she was deployed there in 2003.

Listecki Named Milwaukee Archbishop

11/15/09 - The Archdiocese of Milwaukee announced Saturday that Jerome Listecki has been named archbishop by the Vatican. Listecki succeeds Timothy Dolan, who was named Archbishop of New York earlier this year. The 60 year-old Listecki has served as bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse since March of 2005. Questions have been raised by members of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. SNAP says it has questions about Listecki’s record in dealing with abuse by clergy in La Crosse. SNAP’s Midwest Director Peter Isely says Listecki has refused to meet with the group in the past and has encouraged victims in La Crosse to take their allegations directly to him, not the police.

Homeless Shelter Causing Controversy

11/15/09 - What started out a caring and compassionate way of helping the homeless in Fond du Lac is generating some controversy. A proposal to use the basement at St. Joseph’s Church as an overnight shelter during the winter months has some parents of children attending the neighboring St. Mary’s Academy concerned about safety. Parent Maggie Rose says there’s the potential for some of the homeless to be dangerous. Rose says parents are not against having a homeless shelter, but not at that particular location. Solutions Center Executive Director Lindee Kimball says those seeking shelter overnight would be leaving before most of the kids arrive at school. She says an adjacent shelter hasn’t cause any problems in the last two decades.

No Suspects in 2-Year-Old Murder Case

11/15/09 - Brittany Zimmermann's family is hoping somebody will come forward with information about her murder. The Zimmermann family has placed ads on a Madison billboard and inside buses. Zimmermann was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison when she was killed in her apartment in 2008. Today would have been Zimmermann's 23rd birthday. Madison police have never publicly identified a suspect in the stabbing.

Death of Wisconsin Woman in Bahamas “Suspicious”

11/15/09 - Police in the Bahamas are classifying the death of a tourist from Wisconsin as "suspicious." Investigators are trying to determine whether Sandy Sigasus of West Allis jumped to her death from the 10th floor of the Paradise Island Harbour Resort -- or was pushed. Police got a call late Wednesday that a woman had jumped from the 10th floor of the resort. They found Sigasus dead at the scene. A male companion was in custody late last week. Police weren't calling him a suspect. They just said he was helping their investigation.

Number of Hunting Licenses Down

11/15/09 - It could be another sign of the sour economic times. License sales for deer hunting in Wisconsin are down. About 315 thousand licenses have been sold so far, compared to more than 360 thousand at this time last year. That’s a decline of nearly 13-percent. Greg Matthews of the DNR says programs such as Earn-A-Buck have kept people from hunting in the past, but he suspects they just may not be able to afford hunting this year. The nine-day gun deer season begins November 21st.

’08 Birth Rate Down

11/15/09 - The Wisconsin Department of Health Services reports births were down one percent last year. Live births totaled 72-thousand-two in 2008. At the same time the teen birth rate dropped. Health officials report the percentage of births to women in their teens and early 30s has dropped, while the number of women in their 20s giving birth was rising.
