BDFD: ‘Quick Action Saved Lives in Friday Fire’

11/16/09 - Beaver Dam Deputy Fire Chief Matt Christian says three emergency responders should be commended for their actions during a fire Friday afternoon that may have meant the difference between life and death. Christian says quick action on the part of Beaver Dam Police Officer Andy Strachota, Beaver Dam firefighter Jim Yaroch and retired Beaver Dam firefighter Jeff Omen led to the discovery of the upstairs tenant, fast asleep while fire raged below his bedroom. Brad Jaeger tells us he had just wrapped up a double shift and it would have otherwise taken a Mack truck to wake him up. The cause of the fire is still under investigation but Christian says the point of origin appears to be the front porch. The fire on the 400 block of North Center Street was reported just after 2pm Friday. When firefighters arrived the blaze was raging on the front porch and had quickly spread to the upper levels of the structure.

Columbus Police Changing With New Year

11/16/09 - Change is coming to the Columbus Police Department in January of 2010. Since 2005 there has been an attempt to oust a Police Chief, rejection of plans for a new $2.5 million dollar “Public Safety” building, the dissolution of a Columbus emergency Dispatch Center and the retirement of a veteran Police Chief in 2007. However, changes are taking place. In January the Police Department will be moving out of their cramped City Hall quarters to a renovated building. Acting Chief Dennis Weiner says renovation of the new Police headquarters is well underway. The second positive is that the Police and Fire Commission is meeting Monday night to screen the nearly two dozen application packets received from the candidates for the Police Chief position. If interviews and background checks are completed on time, the Police Department could have a new permanent Chief in January…just in time to move into the renovated facilities.
Accident at Highway 33 and A

11/16/09 - Dodge County authorities were on the scene this morning of an accident in the Town of Fox Lake. Dispatchers say just after 6 a.m. two vehicles and a farm tractor were involved in an accident near the intersection of Highway 33 and Highway A. EMS did respond and transported at least one person to the hospital. Authorities say the vehicles have been moved off the roadway and traffic was flowing as normal around 7 a.m.

Three Injured in Rollover Accident

11/16/09 - Three people were injured after rolling their vehicle yesterday afternoon in the town of Theresa. Dodge County authorities say the vehicle was on County Trunk T-W around 4:20 p.m. when the driver lost control and the vehicle rolled over. EMS took three of the occupants to St. Agnes Hospital but it’s unknown how serious the injuries were. An investigation into the accident continues.

It’s Official, Barrett to Run for Governor

11/16/09 - Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett has a clear path as the Democratic nominee for governor, at least for now. As expected, Barrett announced his candidacy yesterday. And Madison businessman Kevin Conroy then said he would not run – and he’ll support Barrett. That avoids a primary battle, and gives the Democrats the chance to rally behind someone with less than a year before the election. Meanwhile, the Journal Sentinel said Barrett made a last-second change in his announcement speech which involved a pledge on taxes. His prepared remarks said, “Our families and businesses want state tax increases to stop.” But Barrett changed that to quote, “Our families and businesses want fair taxes.” Campaign spokesman Jeff Fleming said people should not read anything into that. He said Barrett wants a fair tax policy without raising state taxes – but he stopped short of a pledge by Republican candidate Scott Walker not to raise taxes. Walker’s campaign spent the weekend attacking Barrett’s record on raising taxes as Milwaukee’s mayor. But to run against Barrett, Walker would have to win a primary next September, and beat out former Congressman Mark Neumann and Appleton businessman Mark Todd. Meanwhile, the state G-O-P questioned Barrett’s desire to be governor. Republican chairman Reince Priebus said the mayor was quote, “dragged into the race” by Governor Jim Doyle and the Obama White House. But Fleming said Barrett is fully committed and quote, “100-percent in.”

1,000 Gather for Funeral of Solider Killed at Fort Hood

11/16/09 - A military general says a Wisconsin soldier killed in the shooting rampage at Fort Hood represented "everything that's good and right with America." Major Gen. Richard Stone says Staff Sgt. Amy Krueger was a model soldier who died while protecting American freedom. Stone spoke Saturday during Krueger's funeral service at Kiel High School, where roughly 1,000 people gathered in the gymnasium. Stone was Krueger's commanding officer when Krueger was first deployed to Afghanistan in 2003. He recalled a day when eight American soldiers died. Krueger comforted him and said, "Sir, we're just going to get through this." The 29-year-old Krueger was among 13 killed in the Nov. 5 shooting at the Texas base. She was preparing for a second deployment to Afghanistan.

Company Files Protest over Vehicles Being Made in Oshkosh

11/16/09 - A future contract is being held up to build Army vehicles at the Oshkosh Corporation. It involves the Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles, which have been made for 15 years by B-A-E Systems in Texas. In August, the Army decided to move the work to Oshkosh – and that company plans to start the five-year project next year. But B-A-E doubts that Oshkosh can deliver the goods for the price it quoted. The amounts were not made public, but analysts said Oshkosh quoted a price that’s 30-percent cheaper. B-A-E has filed a formal protest to the Oshkosh award, and the Government Accountability Board will make a ruling in about a month. Congressman Tom Petri of Fond du Lac says the losers are trying just to take back the contract.

State to Honor Fallen Soldier Today

11/16/09 - Flags at all government facilities will be flown at half-staff today in honor of Army Reserve Captain Russell Seager of Mount Pleasant who died as a result of injuries sustained in the November 5th shootings at Fort Hood. The National Guard will render these honors in accordance with an executive order issued by Gov. Jim Doyle. All Wisconsin state and federal facilities are covered under the order. Other government agencies, businesses and private residences with flagpoles may also honor Seager by lowering their U.S. and Wisconsin state flags to half-staff during the daylight hours today.

Kennedy Holds Open Door Meeting

11/16/09 - Beaver Dam Mayor Tom Kennedy will hold another one of his regular open door meetings on Tuesday. Kennedy says city residents are invited to meet with him, one-on-one, without appointment on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Kennedy says he feels it is important that constituents have the opportunity to speak with him the day after each regular meeting of the common council. The meetings are held in Room 109 on the first floor of City Hall from 10am until noon. Kennedy says he also make himself available for private meetings by appointment by contacting the mayor office.
