1 Killed, 2 Injured in Town of Lowell Accident

12/4/09 - One person was killed and two others injured last night after an SUV collided with a farm tractor in the Town of Lowell. The Sheriff’s Department reports a 53-year-old Reeseville man was driving his Ford Explorer south on Highway G around 9:30 when the collision occurred. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The two men in the tractor, a 53-year-old man and 31-year-old man, both from Reeseville, were flown by Flight for Life to UW-Hospital in Madison. The crash remains under investigation. The fatality is the second in Dodge County in less than a week. 17-year-old Nate Strobel of Iron Ridge was killed early Saturday morning after he rolled his vehicle.

The deaths in our area follow what state DOT officials say was the fourth safest November since World War Two, even though fatalities were up from a year ago. The state D-O-T said 53 people were killed last month. That was up from 41 in November of 2008, but still down from the average of 58 for the past five years. Twelve people were killed during the five-day Thanksgiving period – up from nine a year ago. Officials said 501 people died in Wisconsin crashes in the first 11 months of this year – 41 fewer than at the same time in 2008.

Witnesses say DeLuca was doing tricks on his bike, kicking both legs out to the side while his passenger drank a beer on the back. DeLuca also had his license revoked for two years followed by two years with an ignition interlock device on his vehicle.

Bottoms Up Burglar Arraigned

The pair each face up to 13 years in prison if convicted, but because both are repeat offenders they could each have another six years added to their sentence.

Hundreds Show Up at DNR Meeting in Fond du Lac Co.

12/4/09 - It's up to the DNR now, but hundreds turned out last night to show their support or opposition to the Rosendale Dairy's request to modify a wastewater discharge permit, which would allow the dairy to double its herd size to 8,000 cows. Some people dressed as cows or held signs to indicate their preference to protect the environment. Others were there to show support for the jobs it will create and the hundreds of other positions the dairy will support in the area. If the modification is granted the dairy will be able to spread manure over 13,000 acres. The DNR will make its decision on the permit request next month. (KFIZ)

Democrats Strike Down Health Care Reform Challenge

12/4/09 - Wisconsin’s two U-S senators helped strike down a major Republican challenge to the Democrats’ health care reform package. Democrats Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold both voted against an effort by Arizona Republican John McCain to send the package back to a committee yesterday – with a requirement to preserve a half-billion-dollars in Medicare spending that would otherwise be cut. The measure fell two votes short of the 60 needed for passage. The architect of the Senate package, Democrat Max Baucus, said the current bill does nothing to cut guaranteed Medicare benefits. But Republicans disagreed, and said Medicare needs to be fixed before another government health program is started up. Also, the Senate approved an amendment to let women younger than 50 continue having mammograms to test for breast cancer. Kohl voted for the measure, but Feingold was one of just two Democrats to vote no.

More Charges Possible in 2005 Boating Mishap

12/4/09 - Prosecutors are considering renewed charges against a Fremont man in a 2005 boating mishap that killed a man near Oshkosh. Todd Frisbie was charged with drunken homicide and drunk boating after a powerboat hit a dock and a retaining wall on Lake Butte des Morts (beoo’-deh-more). 38-year-old Alan Richards of Holland Michigan was killed. Former Winnebago County District Attorney William Lennon dropped the charges in 2006, just three weeks before Frisbie was supposed to go on trial. Lennon said he couldn’t prove that Richards drove the boat. But the charges were dismissed without prejudice – leaving open the possibility that they could be filed later if new evidence every turned up. The sheriff’s department said the boat was kept for evidence, and the D-A’s office is expected to file charges soon. The current prosecutor in the case said he could not comment until new charges are brought in court.

Mullis then proceeded to arraignment and entered a “not guilty” plea to charges of Second Degree Sexual Assault With the Use of Force. According to the criminal complaint, the 38-year-old Mullis told his cellmate at the Dodge Correction Institution that he was facing life in prison and had nothing to lose. Mullis allegedly held a razor to his throat, forced him to eat numerous pills of Tylenol and threatened to kill him unless he cooperated. The incident occurred in March. Mullis could have another 40 years added to his sentence if convicted.

Decker Wants DNR Deer Management Personnel Fired

12/4/09 - The Wisconsin Senate’s majority leader wants the D-N-R’s deer management personnel fired, after the recent gun season produced the lowest harvest in 27 years. Democrat Russ Decker blames the D-N-R’s herd-control policies for the fact that only 195-thousand deer were shot in last month’s nine-day season. Decker said his own party of 14 hunters went for days in Lincoln County without seeing a single deer. The agency blamed cold winters the past two years, and wet-and-warm conditions this year. D-N-R Secretary Matt Frank rejected Decker’s call for mass firings. He said he knows hunters are frustrated, but firing the staff is not constructive.
