Major Storm Expected to Hit Tonight

12/8/09 - As we get prepared for the first major snow storm of the season state emergency officials are urging Wisconsin residents to stay home if at all possible. The massive storm is expected to roll into our area later this afternoon and by the time it moves out later tomorrow night we could see accumulations of 10 to 12 inches. Making matters worse will be winds in excess of 40 miles per hour causing blizzard like conditions. Officials say if you do have to travel you should prepare an emergency kit to take along -- and monitor media reports for updates on the storm. Travelers should also check road conditions before leaving home. You can do so by dialing 5-1-1 or visiting the Wisconsin DOT website www.dot.state.wi.us

Man Charged in Jefferson County Deaths

12/8/09 - A Jefferson man has been charged with the shooting deaths of an off-duty police officer and the man she was with last weekend. Twenty-four year old Andrew Wirth faces two counts of first-degree intentional homicide. Investigators say Wirth shot 37 year old Jennifer Luick and 40 year old Gregg Peters outside Vinnie's Rock Bottom Tavern early Sunday morning. Luick had been an officer with the Oconomowoc police department for six years. Witnesses reportedly say the shooting resulted from an argument that started after Luick touched Wirth's buttocks.

Alleged Madison Killer Found Dead

12/8/09 - Dane County Coroner Raymond Wosepka confirms the dead man found in an SUV Monday morning was murder suspect Tyrone Adair. A search for Adair had gone nationwide after two double murders last week. Police had been looking for Adair since the bodies of an ex-girlfriend and the couple's daughter were found in Madison, then the bodies of his current girlfriend and their young daughter were found in Middleton. That was Thursday. A person living in a rural area of Cottage Grove, west of Madison, called authorities to tell them about the SUV parked on the side of a country road. Adair's body was inside. He had apparently died of a gunshot wound.

Poverty Levels Continue to Rise in the Beaver Dam School District

12/8/09 - Nearly half of all elementary students in Beaver Dam are considered economically disadvantaged. At a meeting last night the school board received a breakdown by school of the 49-percent of students considered disadvantaged. At Jefferson, 63-percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, which is the highest rate in the district. Lincoln is at 61-percent, South Beaver Dam is at 58-percent, Wilson is at 47-percent, Washington is at 41-percent, Trenton sits at 40-percent, and Prairie View is at 31-percent. The 49-percent figure for the district is nearly double that of 4-years ago. Superintendent Designee Steve Vessey says while the numbers vary from school to school the quality of education does not.

BDCH Hosts 20th Annual Tree of Lights Ceremony

12/8/09 - Officials connected to a volunteer group that helps to support the Beaver Dam Community Hospitals says there is still time to participate in the annual Tree of Lights program. Each year the program raises thousands of dollars for lifeline and hospice programs at the hospital. People have until December 31 to purchase lights for several trees in front of the hospital as a memorial to lost loved ones. More information is available at www.bdch.com. The group held the lighting ceremony last night.
Beaver Dam Bar Under Scrutiny

12/08/09 - A Beaver Dam tavern could have its liquor license suspended following a fight that resulted in severe injuries to two patrons. The Beaver Dam Administrative Committee last night discussed the November 6 incident at Johnny’s Lounge. A woman allegedly threw pool balls and glass mugs at the patrons but was not apprehended. Chief Dale Boldt says someone could have been seriously injured or killed. He says the woman will be cited but authorities have not been able to locate her. Boldt is expected to recommend 150 demerit points be assessed against Johnny’s Lounge because injuries were involved. Under the Demerit Point Ordinance adopted earlier this year, a business that accumulates 150 points within a rolling 12-month period could see a warning or a liquor license suspension of between 10 and 90 days. The bartender was also criticized by the committee last night for failing to call police following the fight. Boldt is expected to file a formal demit point assessment recommendation before the matter is brought back before the Administrative Committee for approval.

Ice Cream Vendors Now Required To Hold Permits

12/08/09 - If you plan selling ice cream on the streets of Beaver Dam today you might want to stop by City Hall first to pick-up a permit. The Common Council last night approved an ordinance change that adds ice cream vendors to the list of direct sellers who need city documentation before peddling their wares in city limits. The ordinance makes both the seller of the ice cream and the company that employs the seller, equally responsible for violations. The ordinance change was amended on the council floor to expand ice cream sold on city streets to also include any other city-owned public property. Mayor Tom Kennedy recommended the change would help the city avoid wording problems that city officials in Fond du Lac faced last year when a vendor claimed he was selling ice cream in a park and not on city streets. The council last night also approved an ordinance that requires wristbands for those who consume alcoholic beverages at any events permitted by the city. The wrist bands are also required to be different colors for each day of a multi-day event.

12/08/09 - Fire heavily damaged a Mayville home yesterday (Mon) afternoon. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Stanke says his department responded at 12:30pm to the blaze at 219 South Main Street. When crews arrived on scene flames from the first floor front room were visible from the outside of the structure. Stanke says the fire was brought under control relatively quickly and they we on the scene for about two hours. No one was at home at the time fo the fire, which was called in by a neighbor. There were no injuries but a dog and three cats perished. Fire damage was reported on the first floor and basement, where the fire is believed to have originated. There was also heat and smoke damage to the second floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Beaver Dam Teen Sentenced In Drug Death

12/08/09 - The Beaver Dam man who sold a UW-Milwaukee freshman a prescription drug that authorities say played a role in his death will spend one year in jail. In October, 21-year-old Troy Kelm pleaded guilty to two felony counts of delivery of a non-narcotic and had two other charges dismissed. The criminal complaint says the sold 19-year-old Luke Murphy half a pill of Suboxone for $5 in late March but told him not to take it while drinking. Murphy was found dead the next day in a friend's dorm room. The complaint says Murphy had been drinking before he took the drug. On Friday, Kelm also had a three year prison sentence imposed and stayed and was placed on probation for six years.

Winter Parking In Effect

12/08/09 - Winter parking rules in Beaver Dam will be in effect beginning overnight tonight (Tuesday). Beaver Dam Mayor Tom Kennedy says the parking prohibition begins with the first significant snowfall, which is expected tomorrow. Once enacted, no parking will be allowed on city streets between 2am and 6am, so that the Department of Public Works can clear the snow. Citations will be issued for violations and begin at $10 if the ticket is paid within 24 hours. Once the enforcement has been initiated, the parking ban will remain in effect unless it is announced that the ban has been temporarily or permanently lifted. Kennedy says residents who need to apply for an on-street parking permit should apply now so ensure they will have it when the snow starts to fall.
