Fire Destroys Ashippun Home

12/14/10 - Fire completely destroyed a home in Ashippun this morning. Firefighters were called to Lincoln Road at 7:45am. Chief Deonne Eske says when crews arrived flames were visible from the second story and smoke was coming from the eaves. Eske says it took well over one hour for the 50 to 60 firefighters from ten departments to get the blaze under control. An excavator was brought in to take down what remained of the structure. A family of four renting the upstairs was displaced; they are staying with family in Oconomowoc and turned down assistance from the Red Cross. The homeowner was not in the residence at the time. There were no injuries. The cause is thought to be a wood burning store. Eske says the cold weather really hindered their efforts and firefighters were rotated out every 15 minutes. She credits the Ashippun Highway Department for immediately responding with salt trucks to keep the roads safe for tankers coming from other communities. Ashippun received mutual assistance from Lebanon, Neosho, Hustisford, Oconomowoc, Dousman, Lake Country, Okauchee, Summit, and Waukesha.

DPW Reminds of Snow Removal Ordinance

12/14/10 - The Beaver Dam Department of Public Works is reminding residents to shovel their snow. Director David Stoiser says that city ordinance requires that any snow or ice accumulations on public sidewalk fronting private properties must be removed each time it snows. Stoiser says ice accumulations that cannot be removed must be treated with a deicing or abrasive agent. Violation results in the city removing the snow or treating the ice with costs assessed against the property owner. Repeat violations are referred to the Police Department for possible citations. Small quantities of rock salt and sand-salt mixture are available to city residents only at the Public Works Building on South Center Street.
