Gas Line Ruptures in Juneau
10/9/09 - Four city blocks in Juneau were evacuated late this afternoon after a major natural gas line was hit and ruptured. Officials say the incident began a little after noon when a semi hit a power pole at the corner of North Main and West Center Streets knocking out power to customers in the area. Around 4:30pm, as workers were digging a hole for a replacement power pole, they struck the gas line. The Juneau Fire Department and a number of other agencies began evacuating the area immediately, which included the Sheriff’s Department, Courthouse, and the Huber Building. Alliant Energy was able to cap the line within about a half-hour and no one was hurt. Officials say a permanent fix for the gas line would be completed later tonight. The new power pole isn't expected to be completed until Monday. The evacuation order was lifted earlier this evening. Stay tuned to 1430 WBEV and 95.3 WXRO for all of the latest information.
