Wisconsin Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

10/04/09 - A member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard has been killed in Afghanistan, in an attack which also left seven other Wisconsin Guard members wounded. Officials said 26-year-old Sergeant Ryan Adams, of Rhinelander, died Friday in Logar Province, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit. Seven other Wisconsin Guard Soldiers were injured in the same attack and are receiving medical care as needed. Immediate families have been notified. The Wisconsin National Guard will not be releasing names or medical conditions of the injured soldiers.

Short Agenda For Monday Council Meeting

10/04/09 - The Beaver Dam Administrative Committee will start to look at the numbers for the city’s 2010 budget when they meet tomorrow night. The committee will also determine future meeting dates for budget deliberations. City officials asked departments to limit their budgetary increases to 3%. One of the biggest ticket items for consideration this year will be the construction of a new police station on the former YMCA property. The Administrative Committee will hear an update on the Senior Center from Evonne Koeppen, the Community Activities and Services Director. Koeppen will discuss a space needs study by Renschler. There is hopes to have a new Senior Center built by 2011. The Senior Center’s Building Committee recently narrowed down potential sites to the former Herberger’s location, where the storefront would be converted, and the WMFB property, where a center could be built new. Both options would cost around $4 million and the yearly operational costs would be around $70,000. The Senior Center Building Committee is expected to begin the process of a fundraising feasibility study. Also tomorrow, the Administrative Committee will discuss an offer to purchase the old Humane Society property. The Common Council has only two items on their agenda for their 8pm meeting. One resolution would grant beverage operator license’s to a about a dozen bartenders; the other would give Walgreens a Class A liquor license. Both meetings are in city hall.

Kennedy Opens Door Following Council Meeting

10/04/09 - Beaver Dam Mayor Tom Kennedy will hold another one of his regular open door meetings on Tuesday. Kennedy says city residents are invited to meet with him, one-on-one, without appointment on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Kennedy says he feels it is important that constituents have the opportunity to speak with him the day after each regular meeting of the common council. The meetings are held in Room 109 on the first floor of City Hall from 10am until noon. Kennedy says he also make himself available for private meetings by appointment by contacting the mayor office.

Recession Hurting College Grads More Than HS Drop-Outs

10/04/09 - New U.S. Labor Department data show the 21-month recession has taken a greater toll on college graduates than high school dropouts. The latest data show the number of unemployed jobseekers is growing fastest among Americans with higher education. The number of unemployed high school dropouts has risen 99 percent since the recession started in December 2007, totaling 1.8 million. That number exceeded 2.2 million for those with bachelor’s degrees and higher, an increase of 136 percent.

Layoffs at Winnebago Mental Health Institute

10/04/09 - Employees at Winnebago County Mental Health Institute are receiving layoff notices from state officials. About 85 employees are involved in the cutbacks. The facility will not need as many staff since it anticipates a drop in the number of admitted patients next year. Officials said more adolescents are expected to be served as outpatients, thus it is less likely counties will tap into the state mental health hospital. Initial layoffs are slated for December 1st.

Marathon Cheese Cuts Workforce

10/04/09 - Marathon Cheese Corporation, based in Marathon, Wisconsin, is laying off more than 50 of its employees because of an industry slump and the economic downturn. The employees are located at the company’s plant in Mountain Home in southern Idaho. The cuts drop the workforce to 300. Marathon officials said they hope to rehire employees when the cheese market improves.

Drunken Driving Proposal Gains Momentum

10/04/09 - A drunk-driving proposal may gain momentum this month in the state Senate. That body is expected to pass a bill that stiffens penalties and boosts treatment options for drunken drivers. Legislators are worried the law changes will cost millions of dollars. Some advocate a push to pay for the bill with an increased liquor tax. A cost estimate is projected for next week. The earliest the Senate could vote on the bill would be October 20th, when the legislature returns for action on bills.

PSC Urges Weatherization of Homes

10/04/09 - Volunteers are helping to warm up the homes of some low-income seniors and disabled persons during energy awareness month. Wisconsin Public Service Corporation officials said even though it’s only October, cold months are just ahead and people need to be prepared and get their homes weatherized. Some energy-saving tips at home are: Insulate your water heater. Keep blinds open when there’s sun, close them at night. Unplug electric items when not in use, like phone chargers. To make sure heat stays inside this winter, use weather stripping on doors and windows.

Cold Affects Corn Season

10/04/09 - The growing season was cooler than normal this year meaning Wisconsin corn farmers could face weaker crops. Agriculture experts with the University of Wisconsin-Extension said they are evaluating whether early frost in the southwestern portions of the state interfered with the ripening process. In northwestern Wisconsin, agriculture officials said corn probably matured before the frost hit. However, the crops may have more moisture than is ideal, leading to potential storage and spoilage problems.

Leaf Pick-Up Begins Monday

10/04/09 - Leaf pick-up in Beaver Dam begins Monday. Director of Facilities David Stoiser says leaves -- along with lawn grass rakings resulting from leaf gathering, garden vines and stalks – may be placed in the terrace areas of the street edge in loose piles for collection by the Department of Public Works. Collection will continue through late November. Stoiser says yard waste cannot be placed in the street or gutter, or in any containers. Leaves, rakings and garden debris cannot be mixed with other forms of waste like brush or shrubbery cuttings. Stoiser says fruits, nuts and vegetables are not acceptable and should be disposed of as garbage. Beaver Dam’s Yard Waste Drop-Off site is located at 640 South Center Street. No waste of any kind will be allowed from outside the city.

Feingold In Waupun Monday

10/04/09 - U.S. Senator Russ Feingold will hold a listening session in Dodge County tomorrow (Mon). The Democrat from Middleton will be at the Waupun City Hall at 10:15am. The Senator says the listening sessions are part of his pledge to hear from constituents in all of Wisconsin’s 72 counties each year of his six-year term. The Dodge County visit will be Feingold’s 65th listening session this year and his 1217th since he was first elected in 1993.
