DOT Regional Communications Manager Michael Bie says the closure is necessary to allow Wisconsin Southern Railroad to reconstruct the rail crossing over Highway 151. More Households Eligible for Low-Income Heating Assistance

10/3/09 - Up to 40-percent more households will be eligible for low-income heating assistance this winter. Wisconsin officials say about 256-thousand families should qualify because of an increase in federal funding – and because of changes in the home heating program as the result of a new law. Families of four can make just over 45-thousand dollars a year, and still be eligible for assistance. Last year’s maximum income was 31-thousand dollars. Single residents can make over 23-thousand and qualify for government heating help. That’s up from 16-thousand a year ago. Officials began taking applications yesterday. People can apply any time through May 15th. More information is available on the state’s Web site at Wisconsin-Dot-Gov.

Record Number of Exhibitors at World Dairy Expo

10/3/09 - Organizers with the World Dairy Expo in Madison say the number of commercial exhibitors is the largest it’s been since it began more than 40 years ago. Mark Clarke says he wasn’t sure what to expect from this year’s Dairy Expo given the economy. Clarke is the Expo’s general manager. The number of companies taking part grew to 755 this year—up from 725 participating last year. Clarke adds they have a waiting list of 200 exhibitors. He hopes farmers will take the opportunity to milk them for all their worth. Clarke says in this economy, dairy farmers may want to attend a show like this because there are a lot of companies that can help them.

First Frost Ends Colder Growing Season

10/3/09 - The weather may have failed corn growers this year as the first frost for some ends a colder than usual growing season. A cool summer handcuffed farmers this year according to Bill Halfman. He’s an agriculture agent with UW-Extension in Monroe County. Halfman says they’re evaluating whether frost in some areas sealed the fate of corn crops in southwestern Wisconsin. He says it looks like grain will be wet and less ripe this year. Halfman says to export or process corn into other products, the grain needs to meet a 15 ½% moisture standard, anything wetter than that leads to storage and spoilage problems.

Bill Dealing with Illegal Guns Proposed in Madison

10/3/09 - Another bill dealing with illegal guns is proposed at the Capitol. Officials said the bill creates a new penalty for those who give or sell guns over to people who aren’t allowed to have guns. The issue heated up after two Milwaukee police officers were shot this summer, with a gun that had changed hands for forty dollars. The bill would require prompt reporting of lost or stolen guns, within 48 hours, of face up to 90 days in jail or a thousand-dollar fine.

Bus Driver Faces Charges after Driving into Home

10/3/09 - Authorities say the driver of an empty school bus slammed through a woman's bedroom wall, then ignored police as he backed up and drove a few more blocks before he was stopped. Kaukauna police said no one was injured in the crash at 7:10 a.m. Friday. The bus knocked Amy Pyne's home several inches off its foundation and left a gaping hole in a wall. The 48-year-old driver was booked in the Outagamie County jail on eluding and reckless endangerment charges.

Oshkosh Corp. Awarded another Contract

10/3/09 - A $33 million award from the U.S. Army went to the defense division of Oshkosh Corporation. The company will supply a rear-mounted camera system on more than 2,200 military all-terrain vehicles. Oshkosh officials said the technology will be used to navigate Afghanistan’s harsh environments, providing military ATV crews better visibility.

WI Can Still Benefit from Failed Chicago Olympic Bid

10/3/09 - Chicago lost its bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games, but just being a finalist could still bring benefits to Wisconsin. Had Chicago been chosen, several cycling events would have been held around Madison. Even though the Windy City lost out to Rio de Janeiro, Dane County officials said the build-up helped put Wisconsin on the map for cycling. Having an Olympic stamp of approval on cycling courses in Dane County could attract interest from around the world.

State Slogan Taking a Seat

10/3/09 - The state slogan, "Live like you mean it," has been temporarily set aside by the Department of Tourism. Officials question its future just a few months following its debut, after which the slogan was widely mocked. The phrase is paired with a silhouette figure doing a cartwheel across letters that spell out Wisconsin. The tourism department spent $57,000 to develop the new logo and slogan to promote tourism and economic development.

Man Asking WI Residents to Give Back During Daylight Savings Time

10/3/09 - A Wisconsin entrepreneur wants Americans to give a gift of service when daylight saving time falls back an hour on November 1st. L. Maxwell McKissick proposes that once people have changed their clocks back an hour, they donate those 60 minutes by volunteering in their communities. That would add up to more than 300 million hours and a big impact. Especially if people repeat the activity in spring when clocks move forward an hour. By federal law, daylight saving time runs from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday in March until 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November in areas that don't exempt themselves.

Federal Cash will Help Wisconsin Businesses

10/3/09 - Millions of federal dollars would flow to Wisconsin companies and firms with operations in the state under a defense spending bill in debate by the Senate. The bill overall has a $636 million budget. Wisconsin-based projects would total $42.6 million to develop high-powered batteries, laser beams and communications systems. C&D Technologies, which is scheduled to receive $6.2 million to develop a lithium ion battery for the Army, has already received more than $1 million for the project through a previous defense spending measure. Company officials said more funding would help propel its $20 million project to create a new battery for military and commercial use.
