Juneau Residents Evacuated after Gas Main Ruptures

10/10/09 - Over 150 people were evacuated from downtown Juneau yesterday after utility crews struck a natural gas main. Dirt and debris were spraying 20 feet in the air when emergency responders arrived on scene around 4:20pm. Dodge County Patrol Captain Molly Soblewski says the incident began about four hours earlier when a semi truck split a pole in half at the intersection of North Main and West Center Street. Because of the proximity to the Jail, several Huber prisoners were among those who were evacuated from the scene; they were transported to another part of the jail grounds. Residents were allowed to return to their homes around 6pm. There were no injuries. Soblewski credits interagency cooperation for the safe and quick resolution to the incident.

WPD Liking Their New Surroundings

10/10/09 - The Waupun Police Department is settling into their newly remodeled addition. Work began last October on a 7,300 square-foot addition. Police Chief Dale Herringa says they are still moving into some of the building and getting their operations situated. Phase One was completed in May. That entailed the addition to the safety building. Phase Two, the demolition and addition of walls to the existing building, was completed last month. The expansion solved a lack of office and storage space and also compliance issues with the American’s With Disabilities Act. The new station has larger offices, two interview rooms, a garage with four stalls and an impound area, larger locker rooms, a weapons cleaning and storage area, and an evidence processing and storage room that complies with state mandates. The expansion of the Waupun Police Department came in on time and under budget. Herringa says the police department should be adequate for the next couple decades.

Columbus Reviewing Renovation Bids

10/10/09 - Bids on renovation of the “Public Safety Building” that will be the future home for the Columbus Police Department were received this week. The Council will be looking at the bids next Tuesday. The six renovation bids ranged from $114 to $138 thousand dollars.
Converting the Ludington St. Law Building offices and garage into the Public Safety Building could start in November and be substantially completed by mid-January of 2010. Bids were let with the option of the Municipal Clerk of Court’s office moving from City Hall with the Police Department. Mayor Bob Link said that 2009 has been a good year for getting City streets and renovation projects done at or below projected costs. The Council of the Whole will discuss the Public Safety Building bids on Tuesday and approve the start of the renovation project on October 20th.

BD Chamber Seeking Nominations

10/10/09 - The Beaver Dam Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for their yearly recognition of a local business, citizen and non-profit organization. The Chamber’s Executive Director Phil Fritsche says the chamber is soliciting nominations in all three categories through next Wednesday. The Chamber will base their Business of the Year selection on customer service, employee / management volunteerism, charitable contributions and other investments in the community, along with other industry awards that have been earned. Last year, Countryside GM Auto Group was honored. For Citizen of the Year nominations, the Chamber will consider volunteerism, civic involvement and charitable contributions. Last year’s winner was Patricia Coe. Fritsche says the newest addition, the Non-Profit of the Year, will be judged based on their general impact on the community, preferably over the course of a long period of time rather than the recent past, and by other awards and recognitions that the organizations has received. The Women’s Affiliate of the Chamber was recognized in the categories inaugural year. The nominees must be located in Beaver Dam or the surrounding township but they do not need to be Chamber members. Nomination forms are available at the Chamber offices. The Chamber’s 2010 Annual Dinner will be held in January.

Lawmakers Looking to Revise Drunk Driving Laws

10/10/09 - A bipartisan group of Wisconsin lawmakers would make the first drunken driving offense criminal under a new law being considered at the Capitol. Right now it's just a traffic infraction. The same legislation would legalize roadside checkpoints to get drunken drivers off the road. Supporters include Democratic State Representative Peggy Krusick of Milwaukee, Republican State Representative Jim Ott of Mequon and Republican state Senator Alberta Darling of River Hills. Neither criminalizing the first offense nor allowing the checkpoints were included in a bill passed last month in the Assembly. Making that first offense of crime wouldn't go into effect until July 2011. Supporters of the new law says they reached a consensus after almost a year of meetings with people like law enforcement officers and victims of drunk drivers.

WI Sees .2% Increase in Population over the Last Year

10/10/09 - If you live in Wisconsin, you have an estimated five million, 688 thousand neighbors inside the state boundaries. The Department of Administration reports the Badger State's population grew by point-two percent last year. That's the slowest rate of growth in the current decade. The Department of Administration reports a six percent growth since the 2000 Census -- and an additional 324 thousand residents. The experts say much of that growth is seen in the Fox River Valley, parts of western Wisconsin, Dane County and in the southeastern portions of Wisconsin. The population has dropped by one percent in Milwaukee County.

In the North, Fall Colors are Peeking

10/10/09 - Fall colors have finally peaked in much of northern Wisconsin. They’re late this year, perhaps because of the year-long dry spell in much of the north. The D-N-R said the area got some much-needed rain in the past week. Meanwhile, fall colors are still one-to-two weeks away from peaking in much of central Wisconsin. According to travelwisconsin.com, peaks are one week away in Dodge County. In Kenosha, they’re as much as five weeks away. Fall color reports for many communities are available on-line at TravelWisconsin-Dot-Com.

Corn Crop in WI Bigger than Expected this Year

10/10/09 - Wisconsin is expected to have a bigger corn crop this year, even though growers planted less. The National Ag Statistics Service said today that Wisconsin farmers expect to bring in about 418-million bushels of corn this fall. That’s up six-percent from a year ago, despite the fact that 20-thousand fewer acres were planted. Nationally, the government expects a record corn crop of 13-billion bushels – eight-percent more than last year. Wisconsin is also expected to harvest 14-percent more soybeans than in 2008 – or around 63-and-a-half million bushels. Rains and cool weather delayed the state crops early in the season. But the growing season went later than normal – and much of Wisconsin is expecting its first freeze this weekend.

Longer Benefits for Unemployed Wisconsinites

10/10/09 - Unemployed Wisconsinites could get 20 extra weeks of jobless benefits under a bill being considered by the U-S Senate. Majority Leader Harry Reid has announced a compromise in which those who’ve exhausted their unemployment benefits would get 14 extra weeks no matter where they live. The hardest-hit states – with rates above eight-and-a-half percent – would get 20 more weeks. And Wisconsin Senate Democrat Herb Kohl and state workforce development officials have confirmed that the Badger State is among those getting the longer benefits. But it’s not a given just yet. The Senate must still vote on the package, while could happen as early as next week. And because it’s different than one approved by the House, a conference committee would have to come up with a final version.

Police said the suspect followed him outside the diner and confronted him. Officers said they recovered a knife from the suspect’s pocket.
