Beaver Dam Grant Funding Held Up on Technicality
8/19/09 - Beaver Dam has obtained $26 million dollars in grant funding this year, but not all of that money is in city coffers just yet. Officials received word in June that they will be getting $3.7 million to cover the entire cost of the acquisition and demolition of ten downtown buildings. State Senator Scott Fitzgerald told us on WBEV’s Community Comment yesterday that he’s been working with city and state officials to cut through the red tape and get that money to the city. The Department of Commerce is calling into question the city’s grant application, saying the project began before the money was awarded. The downtown project was spurred by last year’s flooding and immediate action was taken because of concerns that the corner Celestial building would fall into the river. State officials were even on hand at a demolition ceremony to announce the funding. Mayor Tom Kennedy remains optimistic; he says they’ve been working night and day to clear up the technicalities and cut through the bureaucracy.
Dodge County Fair Begins Today
8/19/09 - The Dodge County Fair officially enters its 122nd year today and organizers say there’s more to do than ever before. The five-day event features live music, a carnival midway and, of course, plenty of food. We’ll find out tonight who will be this year’s Fairest of the Fair. Also on the calendar: the WXRO Country Bash at Radio Park begins at 5pm, Children’s Story Time in the Youth Building at 5pm and 6pm and Open Class Judging in the Farm Progress Arena, Arts and Crafts Building and Under the Main Grandstand. Gary Allan is on the main stage tonight. Entry to the fair is $6 before 2pm and $9 after. Season tickets are available for $30. Kids under age 9 are free. There is no charge for the grandstand acts or parking.

8/19/09 - City officials in Beaver Dam have got the ball rolling on the 2010 budget. Director of Administration John Somers told the Administrative Committee this week that the city will once again face the challenge of a state imposed levy limit increase of 3%. The state is also holding expenditure increases to 3%. As city department heads prepare their 2010 budget request, Somers says they are being asked to limit their total operating and capital budget increase to no more than 3%. In addition, departments are being asked to reduced overtime by 10%.
FDL Official “Doing All They Can” to Keep Merc in WI
8/19/09 - Fond du Lac City and County officials over the last week sweetened incentive packages trying to persuade Mercury Marine to stay in Fond du Lac. Last Wednesday the City Council met in closed session and last night the County Board. County Supervisor Jim Kiser believes the state, city, and county have done all they can. He's hoping a union vote on the contract Mercury has been offered will help keep the company from consolidating its outboard engine making operations to Stillwater, Oklahoma. (KFIZ)
Dodge County Creates CIP for 2010-2014
8/19/09 - Dodge County has put together a capital improvements program for the next five years. The Board of Supervisors approved the plan last night and County Administrator Jim Mielke says the plan takes into account all projects over $25,000 that could be undertaken in the next five years. Mielke cautioned that the plan only identifies projects that could happen over the next five years and doesn’t mean they’ll be completed. The county board also approved the financial plan for the 2010 budget, which included allocating the four-point-eight million-dollars in county sales and use tax they expect to collect next year.
Columbus to Do Survey
8/19/09 - The Columbus Council OK’d spending $5,650 dollars to hire the UW River Fall’s Survey Research Center to develop and conduct an in-depth mail survey of a random sample of Columbus residents. The survey on municipal issues will go out to 1,000 residents for the first mailing. Research results will help guide the Council in future decisions by discovering resident opinions on issues such as the Udey Dam. The City hopes the Center will speed the survey process along so that survey results can be used when the Council has to make annual Budget decisions in October and November.
Passenger Injured in Rollover Accident
8/19/09 - A passenger in the vehicle of a man allegedly under the influence was injured after their car rolled over in the Town of Lowell just before midnight. The Dodge County Sheriff’s Department says 22-year-old Manuel A Rico was drunk when he lost control of his vehicle on Highway 60 near O 60 Road. His passenger, 18-year-old Gordon Sullivan, was taken by EMS to the hospital. Rico, who was uninjured, was taken to jail and cited for OWI Causing Injury and Bail Jumping.
Father, Son Make Appearances in Court
8/19/09 - A Horicon father and son made their initial appearances in Dodge County Court this week on charges stemming from the killing of a 26-point buck during a closed season. Twenty-four year-old Anthony Nisiewicz and his 45-year-old father Wayne are accused of killing the deer last December 31st and covering up the way it was killed. According to the criminal complaint Anthony told a conservation warden he'd shot it with a bow and arrow, but a DNR veterinarian found two bullet holes and lead particles in the carcass. The two will return to court on September 14th and could have a jury trial on October 7th. (KFIZ)
SeniorCare Being Extended
8/19/09 - Wisconsin's popular SeniorCare program is being extended through 2012. The announcement was made by the Obama administration yesterday. That was good news for 90 thousand seniors who save a lot of money through the prescription drug program. SeniorCare had been scheduled to expire at the end of this year. Just three years ago the state congressional delegation had to scramble to save SeniorCare when the Medicare Part D program started. SeniorCare is easier to use -- with a one-page application form -- offers better coverage, lower co-payments and is much cheaper to run.
Milwaukee Mayor Underwent a Number of Surgeries Following Attack
8/19/09 - The brother of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he had to undergo three hours of surgery to repair his hand. Barrett got stitches in his head and needed plastic surgery to fix a cut running from his cheek to his nose. Barrett is home from the hospital, being hailed as a hero. He was beaten when he tried to intercede in a domestic dispute on his way out of the Wisconsin State Fair last Saturday. John Barrett says his brother lost some teeth in the assault. He says Anthony Peters pulled a gun on the mayor before beating him with what was described as an extendable, police-style baton.
Congressman to Hold Numerous Listening Sessions in the State
8/19/09 - Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan says you don't win a debate by shouting down people on the other side. Ryan will hold a series of listening sessions on health care reform in his 1st Congressional District next week. The Janesville Republican is hoping a lot of people show up, but he's also hoping people can respect the fact that others may disagree with them. Ryan has scheduled 19 of the listening sessions, starting August 25th in Kenosha. In some cases he has moved the location to accommodate larger crowds than originally expected.
