Edwards Arraigned in Kentucky For Wisconsin Murder
8/2/09 - Edward W. Edwards plead “not guilty” in a Kentucky courtroom to charges he killed a Wisconsin couple back in August 1980. Tim Hack and Kelly Drew were each 19-years-old when they disappeared from a wedding reception in Sullivan. Two months later their bodies were found near Watertown a few miles away from the reception hall. Edwards worked as a maintenance man at that reception hall, the Concord House. Jefferson County investigators linked him to the crime using DNA testing. He was arrested last Thursday and made his first court appearance in Louisville yesterday. Edwards is 76 years old. An officer pushed him into the hearing room in a wheelchair. Edwards was using an oxygen tank and had a cast on his arm. He was held on $500,000 cash bond, and a judge scheduled a probable cause hearing for Monday.
Neuman To Appeal Guilty Conviction
8/2/09 - Dale Neumann's attorney says his conviction on second degree reckless homicide charges will be appealed. Neumann was found guilty in a Marathon County courtroom yesterday. He's accused of praying instead of seeking medical help for his 11 year old daughter on the day she died. Neumann's wife was already convicted of the charge. Madeline Neumann died on the floor of the family's home outside Weston March 23, 2008. She was surrounded by a prayer group. One of the members did call 9-1-1 when the girl stopped breathing. Both parents face up to 25 years in prison when they are sentenced.

8/2/09 - Witnesses say convicted killer Ralph Armstrong showed little emotion as he walked out of the courtroom last Friday. The judge ordered murder charges against him in a 1981 case be dropped. Prosecutors evidently withheld evidence that would have helped Armstrong's defense nearly three decades ago. He was found guilty of killing University of Wisconsin-Madison student Charise Kamps. The Wisconsin Supreme Court overturned his conviction four years ago. A new trial was ordered when DNA testing failed to connection Armstrong to the crime. He's not out of prison yet. Prosecutors have 20 days to decide whether to appeal the judge's ruling.
Kennedy Comments on MEC Deal
8/2/09 - Mayor Tom Kennedy says the recent announcement of the expansion of Mayville Engineering Company in Beaver Dam is extremely good news for the city. During a special meeting on Thursday night, the Beaver Dam Common Council approved a developer’s agreement with MEC to bring a new 313,000 square foot facility to the Beaver Dam Industrial Park. The company plans to add another paint line, bringing with it almost 135 new jobs. Kennedy says the endeavor with MEC is yet another example of the city moving forward. Kennedy says at a time when most communities are in need of solutions, Beaver Dam is making solutions. The deal with MEC involves a 20-acre site valued at $30,000 an acre, which MEC will pay to the city in full if the project has not been substantially completed by the end of next year. The city will also provide a $935,000 cash incentive, which will be paid back with their roughly $175,000 in property taxes. The salary range for the jobs would be roughly $14 to $17 an hour for skilled positions. Ground could be broken as early as next month with production is expected to start in June of 2010.
Columbus/ Fall River Regionalization Plans Considered Tuesday
8/2/09 - Columbus and Fall River Engineers are considering “regionalization” of Waste Water facilities for the City and Village. The proposed upgraded collection and treatment system will have to be able to handle the DOA projected growth in population. A $5.2 million dollar Waste Water Management Plan was developed over the past two years in response to warnings to the City from the DNR. The Columbus Council will be voting to approve the Facilities Management Plan when they meet on Tuesday.
Domestic Partnership Registry Begins Monday
8/2/09 - Dozens of same-sex couples are expected to sign up for the state's domestic partnership registry starting tomorrow. That registration process will be partners many of the same legal protections accorded spouses -- like hospital visitation, inheritance and medical leave rights. County clerks have been getting ready for long lines of people who have waited years to have their relationships recognized.
OSHA Fines We Energies
8/2/09 - The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is fining We Energies and one of its contractors in connection with last winter's power plant explosion. The February blast injured eight workers. OSHA says the utility company failed to provide contractors with the safety information they needed. The contractor based in Waukesha is accused of failing to follow proper safety procedures. The two entities are being fined 100 thousand dollars each. Officials at We Energies say they are working with the federal agency to make sure the accident isn't repeated.
Kenosha Chrysler Holds Out Hopes For Fiat Deal
8/2/09 - There are two plans being considered that might keep Kenosha's engine plant operating and online. Chrysler has announced the plant will close its doors next year. Local officials are starting negotiations to try to maintain the hundreds of jobs for workers in the Kenosha area. Either of the two plans might have Chrysler's new parent company, Fiat, taking over. It could be converted to a tractor-engine facility which would supply a Racine tractor factory already connected to Fiat. It could also make engines for Fiat cars. Neither possibility is certain right now.
Wisconsinites Log Fewer Miles
8/2/09 - Wisconsinites are driving less. Miles driven were down over the past year, according to the Department of Transportation. Those miles decreased by 3-point-4 percent in Wisconsin, compared to an over six percent drop nationwide. Experts say it’s likely due to the continued recession, combined with high fuel prices. The DOT study shows motorists drove six million miles fewer per day on state highways -- the largest decrease since World War Two.

8/2/09 - Abby Smith is the new Miss Columbus for 2009 / 2010. Abigail Smith, daughter of Kristi Holbrook and Steve Smith won the crown and $1,000 dollars in last night’s Pageant competition. Samantha Seltzner daughter of Carmen and Jeff Seltzner was first runner up and won $200. Amy Greathead, daughter of Pat and Roger Greathead took home the second runner up prize and $100. Erin Strade, the outgoing Miss Columbus said “after I get done crying, I’m going to run for Miss Wisconsin.”

Kennedy says city residents are invited to meet with him, one-on-one, without appointment on the first and third Tuesday of every month. Kennedy says he feels it is important that constituents have the opportunity to speak with him the day after each regular meeting of the common council. The meetings will be held in Room 109 on the first floor of City Hall from 10am until noon. Kennedy says he also make himself available for private meetings by appointment by contacting the mayor office.
