Dodge County Man Arrested for 1999 Murder
8/7/09 - A Dodge County man is due in court today for the 1999 murder of a co-worker in Germantown. 49-year-old Mark Libecki of Theresa was arrested yesterday as he left his job at the Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation. That’s close to where he allegedly killed 22-year-old Theresa Wesolowski of Milwaukee. Her body was found near her car about a block from the plant. She had 46 stab wounds, including two to the heart. In 2003, the F-B-I concluded that Wesolowski’s killer knew her, and police were confident that D-N-A evidence would help crack the case. In 2006, authorities said they discovered that Libecki’s D-N-A was on the victim’s hands. Investigators then found an S-U-V that Libecki owned at the time – and a blood stain in a seat cushion had Wesolowski’s D-N-A. The victim’s husband Frank said his wife and Libecki worked the same shift at Smurfit-Stone, but he didn’t know of any closer relationship than that. He said it was hard to believe that Libecki kept working at the same place for 10 years before he was arrested.
Cambria Working on Restoring Law Enforcement Presence
8/7/09 - Officials in the Village of Cambria are working to restore a law enforcement presence after the abrupt vote to dissolve their police department earlier this week. About two dozen residents attended a special board meeting last night and opinions were split on the matter. Half the public comments were supportive saying the current board has a track record of operating carefully. One resident said the tough economy forced a change that should be looked at as an opportunity. Others were more critical and questioned why the board moved so quickly. One woman said she was putting her house on the market because she didn’t want to live in a community without police protection.
Village President Glen Williams said something had to be done quickly because the village will have to spend the same amount of money on law enforcement next year as they do during the current fiscal year. The board last night decided to move quickly on assembling an ordinance that would allow for a temporary, part-time Marshall to cover immediate concerns like traffic and village ordinance enforcement. A vote could come as soon as Monday.
For a more permanent solution, Williams said an ad hoc committee will be formed in the next week or so to explore options. Williams says the committee will determine if the village should permanently implement a Marshall form of law enforcement, or consider a “constable” which is an elected position that would be responsible for enforcing village ordinances and assisting with animal control. Williams says contracting permanently with Columbia County is not an option. The village is also looking for feedback on when protection is most needed. Those interested in submitting comments to the village, or sitting on the ad hoc committee, are asked to contact the village offices at 348-5443 during normal business hours, 8am to 4pm.
Deputies Forced to Taze Subject
8/7/09 - A father and son were arrested Wednesday night after an altercation with authorities in the town of Calamus. Dodge County authorities say deputies were on there way to serve a warrant on a 16-year-old boy when dispatchers took a call reporting the boy was armed with a shotgun. While they were discussing how to approach the home the boy allegedly came out with a knife in his hand. The deputies ordered him to the ground but he reportedly did not comply so they tased him before taking him into custody. One of the officers did sustain an injury to his hand during the altercation. The boy’s father, Mark Reichwald Sr., was also taken into custody on a probation hold. The 16-year-old has been charged with felony Battery to Law Enforcement.
FDL Teen Killed in South Carolina
8/7/09 - A Fond du Lac County teenager was killed while vacationing in South Carolina. Authorities said 18-year-old Megan Loehr of Mount Calvary was jogging with her mother, when she was struck by an S-U-V making a right turn on a red light. It happened Wednesday in Myrtle Beach. The driver told police he did not see Loehr. He was charged with not obeying a traffic light, and having faulty tires on his vehicle.

8/7/09 - The numbers of laid-off Wisconsinites seeking their first unemployment checks were down last week from the week before. The U-S Labor Department said Wisconsin had just over 18-thousand new requests for jobless benefits, about 15-hundred fewer than the previous week. Wisconsin had the nation’s 14th-largest decrease – but the number of claims was still doubled from the same week the year before. A separate report from state officials said the total jobless claims so far this year were 80-percent above the same period in 2008.
Citizen’s Group Starts Petition to Force Referendum in Waupun School District
8/7/09 - A citizen’s group has started a petition that would put the question of Fox Lake detaching from the Waupun School District and joining the Randolph School District to the voters. Concerned Area Residents for Education member Tim Meekma says the group met Tuesday and finalized the petition which must be signed by 10-percent of the registered voters in the Waupun district. Meekma says they now have until a week from Tuesday to gather the signatures and must present them to the Waupun School Board prior to the 2nd Tuesday in September. That would force Waupun and Randolph to have a referendum in November.
Officials Split on Direction of YMCA Building
8/7/09 - Now that the city of Beaver Dam is in ownership of the former YMCA property, the question becomes what to do with the structure. Mayor Tom Kennedy says city officials seem to be in agreement that the site is ideal for a police department, leaving the city with three different options: partial renovation, complete renovation or demolition. Kennedy says he would prefer maintaining the structure in its current state as much as possible. Police Chief Dale Boldt told city officials in committee this week that he would prefer to build new. There is $6000 remaining from the funds designated for the recently completed space needs study. Kennedy says that money will be used to update the study with the recently-acquired YMCA property. Once that is complete, Kennedy says city officials will have a better understanding of the structure and should be able to make a more informed decision.

8/7/09 - The Fond du Lac man who reportedly had a part of his anatomy glued to his stomach by four angry women is now accused of abusing a child, threatening his wife, and stealing the urn of her father’s ashes. 36-year-old Donessa Davis Senior was charged in Fond du Lac County Circuit Court yesterday with a felony and three misdemeanors. He made worldwide headlines after saying he was lured to a motel in Stockbridge – and his wife and three women with whom he had affairs tied him up, and used Super Glue on a part of his anatomy. The charges against Davis accuse him of giving head injuries to a child. Prosecutors said he also gave his wife a message that he had her father’s ashes – and for every hour she didn’t call him back, he’d dump out a cup of those ashes. All four women are due in court while Davis will be back in court next Friday.
Edwards Health Delaying Extradition on Murder Charges
8/7/09 - A Kentucky man charged with killing two teens in Jefferson County in 1980 will not return to Wisconsin until next week to face his charges. 76-year-old Edward Edwards agreed this week not to fight his extradition to the Badger State. But officials say Edwards’ health problems are holding up his return. And Jefferson County Detective Sergeant Larry Lee says special arrangements will be needed to transport him back to the state. Edwards was arrested a week ago, when investigators said D-N-A evidence linked him to the slayings of Tim Hack and Kelly Drew in August of 1980, after they left a wedding reception in Sullivan. Authorities in Louisville said Edwards was moved yesterday from Louisville’s jail to a facility that can deal with his health issues better. They refused to elaborate on Edwards’ medical problems. But after his arrest last week, a neighbor told a reporter that Edwards suffers from diabetes and other ailments – and he uses a pacemaker, supplemental oxygen, and a wheelchair.
Big Drop in Sales for Kohl’s Department Stores Last Month
8/7/09 - Kohl’s Department Stores reported another drop in sales last month – but it was less than what outside analysts expected. Kohl’s, which is based in Menomonee Falls, had a same-store sales decline of three-point-two percent in the four weeks ending August first. Analysts from Retail Metrics had projected a four-point-three percent drop. Wall Street reacted positively, and Kohl’s stock moved up in today’s early trading. The firm also increased its earnings projection for the current quarter. It’s now 73-to-74 cents a share, up from an earlier estimate of 56-to-64 cents. C-E-O Kevin Mansell said Kohl’s had its biggest sales activity in the southwestern U-S. The chain got a boost there when Mervyn’s of California closed.
20th Annual Truck ‘N Show Gets Underway
8/7/09 - Trucks from all over the lower 48 are converging on Waupun this weekend for the 20th Annual Waupun Truck ‘N Show. Founder and organizer Steve Wendt says even with the economy, early registrations are on pace with last year. Over 300 trophies and plaques will be awarded in a variety of categories. Registration begins at 9am and judging will take place tomorrow. Wendt says there will also be appearances from former Green Bay Packers Gilbert Brown and Santana Dotson on Saturday. Alex Debogorski with the television show “Ice Road Truckers” will be on hand both days. At noon on Saturday, Wendt says a team of skydivers will jump from far above the city, bringing with them a huge American flag. There is an eight-mile long Light Show Parade of Trucks after dusk tonight and another truck parade tomorrow afternoon. Over 10,000 are expected at the event, which also features food, music and kids games.
Outside of the Waupun Truck Show, it’s also Fun Fest weekend in Fox Lake. There will be a softball and co-ed volleyball tournament, the traditional beer and food tent and a silent auction. The event will get underway tomorrow at Fireman’s Park. Tonight, a benefit for Church Health Services will take place at the Beaver Dam Country Club. For $65 dollars participants will play a 9-hole best ball scramble played in the dark with glow in the dark golf balls. There is a chance for prizes and there will also be live and silent auctions. The event begins at 5 p.m.
