Lighting Strikes Duplex in Fox Lake
8/3/09 - A duplex in Fox Lake was struck by lighting this morning. Fox Lake Assistant Fire Chief Tim Streich says lighting struck a TV antenna on the roof of a duplex at 220 South Mill Street just before 5 a.m. The lighting traveled down the antenna and burned a hole in the attic roof. Firefighters were able to douse the fire quickly and contain it to the upper level of the building. Streich says smoke and water damage was minimal. The residents of the duplex have been allowed to stay in the home. Firefighters were on scene for about an hour-and-a-half.
FDL Authorities Pull Another Body From River
8/3/09 - An autopsy is scheduled today on the body of a 55-year-old man found in the Fond du Lac River. A resident saw the body just before 12:30 yesterday afternoon, and Fond du Lac authorities removed it about an hour-and-15-minutes later. It’s not known how long the body was in the river, or how the man died. His name was not immediately released. It’s the second time in two weeks a body was discovered in the Fond du Lac River. Police said Kyle Seering of Fond du Lac apparently rode his bicycle into the water on July 21st, and died after hitting his head on rocks.
Edwards Was “Prime Suspect” in 1960 Slayings of 2 Teens on West Coast
8/3/09 - A man arrested in Kentucky for the 1980 murders of two high school sweethearts in Jefferson County returns to a Louisville courtroom today. 76-year-old Edward Edwards pleaded innocent Saturday to first-degree murder charges in the slayings of Tim Hack and Kelly Drew, both 19. Next, he faces a probable cause hearing. And he still faces extradition back to Wisconsin, where Edwards faces life prison terms. Over the weekend, the F-B-I confirmed that Edwards was on its Ten-Most-Wanted list in 1961. He was considered a prime suspect in the killings of two 19-year-olds in Portland Oregon in 1960. And officials said he impersonated a federal officer, fired shots at a house, and turned in fake fire alarms. Other news reports said Edwards was involved in at least 43 robberies – including bank heists – plus other crimes in the 1950’s-and-‘60’s. He even wrote an auto-biography in 1972 called “Metamorphosis of a Criminal.” Edwards was arrested last week in the Jefferson County slayings. Officials said D-N-A from his semen was on Drew’s pants found five days after she and Hack vanished. They were last seen leaving a wedding reception in August of 1980, at a hall where Edwards was a maintenance man at the time.
Jury Selection for Alleged Ehlenfeldt Killer to Start this Week
8/3/09 - Jury selection begins Thursday for the trial of a second man accused of killing a Columbus native and his wife in a chicken restaurant they owned in Palatine, Illinois. Authorities said James Degorski shot-and-killed Richard Ehlenfeldt and five of his employees in 1993. Juan Luna, a former employee, was convicted in 2007 of robbing the restaurant and killing Ehlenfeldt’s wife Lynn. The case went unsolved for nine years until Degorski’s ex-girlfriend went to authorities and implicated the pair. Prosecutors say they don’t have physical evidence against Degorski. But they do have a videotaped statement that the defense is still trying to prevent the jury from seeing. Ehlenfeldt’s father ran the Eager Beaver Laundry service and served as the town’s mayor.
Domestic Partner Registry Begins Today
8/3/09 - A number of communities are expecting droves of same-sex couples to sign up for Wisconsin's domestic partnership registry Monday in what they're calling a historic step toward equality. However, that is not the type of response expected in Dodge County where Clerk Karen Gibson says she has received barely any calls from county residents about the new budget measure. Registering will give same-sex couples dozens of the same legal protections as spouses, including hospital visitation, inheritance, and medical leave rights. Though it becomes official today a group has filed a lawsuit claiming the registry is in violation of the constitutional ban on gay marriage passed by voters in 2006.
Teen Worker Arrested for Stealing More Than $2,500 from Convenience Store
8/3/09 - An 18-year-old woman has been arrested in Waupun for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars from her workplace since May. Authorities say the owner of the Waupun Citgo on Main Street alerted authorities late last month that the woman had been stealing from the business for a few months. According to police, a review of register logs and video footage show that more than $2,500 in cash was taken over the three-month period as well as other items. During her arrest authorities also found THC, drug paraphernalia and another controlled substance. The woman was taken into custody and booked on theft and drug charges.
Man Still in Custody on Burglary Charges
8/3/09 - A man suspected in burglaries in three area communities could be charged as early as today. The 36-year-old was taken into custody on July 26th and remains in jail on a probation hold as authorities finish their investigation. Authorities say the Waupun man is suspected in one break-in in Waupun, one in Dodge County, and three in Fond du Lac County. The man was taken into custody during a high risk traffic stop after an officer identified a vehicle that was believed to have been seen at the crime scenes. Police have started to return stolen items to their owners.
Tiedt Gets Probation
8/3/09 - A Hartford man was sentenced to two years probation after being convicted of attacking a Mayville man at an after-bar party earlier this year. 27-year-old Paul Tiedt was found guilty on charges of battery, criminal damage to property and criminal trespass to a dwelling. Authorities say Tiedt had been out drinking with the victim and another friend in Mayville this past spring and went to a home on Marguerite Court after the bars closed. According to the 23-year-old victim, Tiedt had been asked to leave the home when the attack happened. Witnesses say Tiedt knocked the victim onto the couch and proceeded to choke him. Another man was able to separate the two and which point Tiedt. However, he later came back and kicked in the door. He was gone when police arrived. Tiedt must also perform 80hours of community service and can’t drink or posses any alcohol.
WI/MN Partnership Off to Slow Start
8/3/09 - It’s been four months since the governors of Wisconsin and Minnesota said they could each save 10-million-dollars by doing things together. But the effort appears to be off to a much slower start than expected. The Associated Press said Wisconsin has only saved 74-thousand-dollars so far. And while Minnesota’s governor refused to give a similar figure, the A-P said it could only quantify about 25-hundred-dollars in savings there. State Assembly Republican Kitty Rhoades of Hudson said there has not been any savings that quote, “regular people at the grocery store would be interested in.” Wisconsin got a better price on government software from a Minnesota contract. And the Badger State received most of an extra 200-thousand-dollars collected in joint wage garnishments for various debts. Minnesota agencies still expect savings, but they’re not sure how much. Both states have scrapped some operations they do very differently – like predicting air quality and inspecting carnival rides. But spokesmen for both governors say their collaboration is just getting started. Lee Sensenbrenner of Governor Jim Doyle’s office says every tax dollar counts – and whatever savings have been found are real.
Coldest Summer in Close to 20 Years
8/3/09 - It’s the coldest summer in 17 years in parts of Wisconsin – and the National Weather Service says we’re going through an El Nino (neen-yo)-type weather pattern. The average temperature this summer in La Crosse was just 68-degrees through the end of July. That’s four degrees cooler than normal. It has also reduced the number of thunderstorms we’ve had – even though parts of Wisconsin had some boomers overnight. Hail fell in La Crosse and Pittsville. North central areas got up to two-inches of rain. And parts of central and southwest Wisconsin remained under a severe thunderstorm watch until 6 this morning. A low-pressure system is moving across Wisconsin, bringing a chance of more rain and thunderstorms to most areas. It will all clear out tonight, with partly cloudy skies expected statewide into Friday. Highs will generally be in the 70’s-and-80’s each day. But forecasters say the upper-level wind patterns could change by the weekend. And that could bring in above-normal temperatures – along with a better chance of thunderstorms.
Powerball Up to $138M
8/3/09 - The Powerball jackpot is up to 138-million-dollars for the next drawing on Wednesday. Nobody won the top prize on Saturday. And nobody from Wisconsin won the 200-thousand second prize, either. One player in the Badger State won 40-thousand by matching four regular numbers plus the Powerball, with the Power Play multiplier of four. Almost 28-thousand Wisconsin players won smaller prizes, including three who won 10-thousand-dollars each. Saturday's numbers were 5, 37, 39, 46, and 53. The Powerball was eight. This is the fifth time this year the jackpot is above 100-million. Wednesday's cash option is almost 69-million-dollars for a single winner who chooses to take the whole prize now.
