Man Charged in Decades Old Murder
8/1/09 - A Kentucky man has been charged in Jefferson County with the murders of two high school sweethearts after they left a wedding reception 29 years ago. Two counts of first-degree murder were filed Friday against 76-year-old Edward Edwards of Louisville. Sheriff’s and state Justice officials announced the arrest late Thursday night. A criminal complaint said 19-year-old Tim Hack was stabbed in the back-and-chest. And 19-year-old Kelly Drew had marks on her ankles and wrists that indicated she was tied up. She was apparently strangled. Over the years, investigators learned that Edwards had worked as a maintenance man at the Concord House in Sullivan, where the wedding reception took place. At a press conference yesterday (Fr) Sheriff Paul Milbrath and District Attorney Sue Happ say Edwards was interviewed about the murders back in 1980. Detectives submitted new evidence to the State Crime Lab a couple years ago, and they went to Louisville to interview Edwards last month. Hack’s father Dave told reporters yesterday he’s relieved the suspect was someone the families didn’t know. Hunters found the two teens badly decomposed bodies east of Watertown about two months after they disappeared. Edwards is expected to be arraigned this morning in Louisville on a fugitive warrant which found valid would lead to an extradition hearing.
Farmers Report More than 100 Goats Stolen in Late July
8/1/09 - More than 100 goats valued at an estimated $32,000 were stolen from a couple of area farms late last month. A farmer in the town of Trenton says that while he was at a convention in Washington D.C. he had 43 goats stolen from his Redwood Drive farm while a Markesan farmer had about 60 goats stolen from his farm on July 29th. While these are the only two cases in Dodge County other farmers in the state as well as in Minnesota and Iowa have seen their goats go missing. Sheriff Todd Nehls says they’ve only dealt with this type of case once or twice over the past 10-years, and it’s usually someone who wants the goat to eat or use in a ritual. Authorities are asking if you have any information regarding the thefts to call them.
House Approves Additional Money for “Cash for Clunkers” Program
8/1/09 - The U.S. House has voted to expand the Cash for Clunkers program. The program allows drivers to receive a rebate of up to 45 hundred dollars when trading in a old car for a more fuel-efficient vehicle. However, it was in danger of using up its billion-dollar budget just three days after it started. Congressman Dave Obey called on federal lawmakers to add up to two billion to the program. Obey says the massive response to the program shows it will work to generate sales and stimulate the economy, and lawmakers need to make sure there's enough money to fund the incentive. The Senate is expected to vote on the addition early next week.
Minor Damage Done in Mill Street Fire
8/1/09 - A garage fire in Beaver Dam Thursday night resulted in minor damage to the structure. Fire officials were called out to 110 East Mill Street just before 7pm. The resident of the home was attempting to remove a tree stump from the ground by burning it, but the fire quickly spread to the nearby garage. Crews were on the scene for less than an hour. Fire officials say that burning a tree stump does violate the city’s open burning ordinance.
WPD Looking for Vandals that Slashed Pools
8/1/09 - Waupun Police are looking for the vandals that damaged some above-ground swimming pools. Police say four pools were slashed and deflated. The vandalism occurred between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Those with information could be eligible for a reward if their information leads to the arrest of those responsible. Neumann Trial Deliberations Continue this Morning
8/1/09 - The jury resumes deliberations this morning in the trial for Dale Neumann, the Wisconsin father charged with second-degree reckless homicide in the death of his daughter. Neumann is accused of praying instead of getting medical help for 11 year old Madline March 23, 2003. The jury deliberated nine hours before telling the judge it was deadlocked last night. The jury is sequestered in a Wausau hotel. Neumann's wife, Leilani, was convicted on the same charge last spring. She will be sentenced in October.
Recall Effort Abandoned
8/1/09 - An effort to recall Governor Doyle is being abandoned. The group Wisconsinites Interests Now, or WIN, announced plans this spring to try and recall the governor a full year before his term in office was up. However, WIN leaders are calling off the campaign, saying they could not reach a self-imposed goal of recruiting 10 thousand volunteers to collect signatures before September. Recalling Doyle would have required the group to collect 540 thousand signatures in a 60-day time frame. Rather than continue the effort, WIN leaders said yesterday they plan to focus on removing Doyle from office during the next general election in 2010.
Obama Losing Support in Wisconsin
8/1/09 - A new public opinion poll shows President Obama losing support in Wisconsin, more than he has nationally. UW-Madison polling expert Charles Franklin says the report by Survey USA is in line with what other public opinion samplings have been showing lately, but it is worse in Wisconsin for the president. Obama's favorable rating in the Badger State has dropped from 59 percent in June to an even 50 percent, the lowest since he took office. Franklin says the administration should be concerned by the dropping numbers, especially in states that have been hit by job losses and state budget problems.
Authorities Keeping Close Eye on Motorcycle Gangs in Northern WI
8/1/09 - Federal, state and local law enforcement authorities have been gathering along the Wisconsin border with Minnesota, trying to head off any trouble. Rival motorcycle groups are meeting. The Hells Angels are in Carlton County this weekend, while about 200 members of the rival Outlaws are in the Superior area on the Wisconsin side. Washburn County Sheriff Terry Dryden says all the cops will try to avoid a repat of 2006, when there was a shooting as the groups clashed in Sturgis, South Dakota. There have been reports that members of the Hells Angels are planning to come into Superior this weekend. Officials are expecting members of both groups to move on by next Monday.
Midwest Airlines Sale Almost Completed
8/1/09 - The final price tag was 31 million dollars in cash and taking over Midwest Airlines' debt. Republic Airways Holidays says the deal is completed. Midwest has been based in Milwaukee. In announcing the deal, Indianapolis-based Republic says Midwest will keep its name, operating as a branded carrier. Republic is also trying to buy Frontier Airlines. A court approved a proposed deal, but Southwest Airlines then jumped into the bidding. An auction will be held later this month.
Legislator Wants Performance Evaluations for Teachers
8/1/09 - A Dane County lawmaker wants to know whether teachers are earning their pay. State Representative Brett Davis says there are some world-class teachers in Wisconsin. His mom is a third grade teacher and his brother is a principal at a school in Green Bay. Still, Davis thinks it's wrong that current state law prohibits schools districts from using results of student exams to evaluate teacher performances. The Oregon Republican is introducing legislation that would repeal the state's current prohibition on using student test results to evaluate teaching performances. Davis says the move would also make Wisconsin eligible for more federal funding.
Kenosha Man Arrested After Illegal Weapons Found During House Fire
8/1/09 - A Kenosha man has been arrested after his home caught on fire. Kenosha firefighters say they discovered a cache of automatic weapons and grenades when they went inside that house to put the fire out. Fire officials say the weapons had nothing to do with the fire starting. Crews stayed on the scene about five hours last Wednesday. Officials are still investigating how that fire might have started. The homeowner will likely face weapons charges for possessing the illegal firearms.
Man Arrested After Striking Squad Car While Drunk
8/1/09 - It's bad enough to get drunk, then drive. It's worse to slam your car into another car. Twenty-six year old Blake Borchert made things even worse Friday morning. He's accused of being drunk when he rammed a Sun Prairie police squad car. Borchert was arrested by Dane County sheriff's deputies a short time later. In addition to all the other charges, he is accused of hit and run. The Sun Prairie officer wasn't hurt. He was reportedly on a traffic stop when Borchert side-swiped his squad car, then drove away.
Petri to Hold Town Meetings
8/1/09 - U.S. Congressman Tom Petri will be holding town meetings in our area over the next two weeks. The Fond du Lac Republican, who represents most of our listening area, will make a stop at the Caestecker Public Library in Green Lake on Monday August 10 at 9:30 a.m. He will follow that meeting with another one at Horicon City Hall later that afternoon beginning at 2:30pm. Petri will also be at the Watertown Municipal Building on Thursday, August 13 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
