Police Bust Drug House in Columbus

11/10/08 - Three people are in custody after Columbus police busted an alleged drug house last Friday. Acting Police Chief Dennis Weiner (left) says his department executed a search warrant on the residence after a 6-week investigation and seized marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a handgun and some prescription medications that didn’t belong to anyone living in the home. Authorities have referred a number of drug related charges against the three people to the Columbia County District Attorney’s office. Those include a 38-year-old Columbus man for delivery of a controlled substance to a minor, maintaining a drug house, and possession of a controlled substance that didn’t belong to him. Also facing charges is a 14-year-old Columbus juvenile for delivery of a controlled substance to a minor, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a Controlled Substance. The third person charged was a 19-year-old Beaver Dam man for delivery of a Controlled Substance to a minor. The case remains under investigation and it’s possible an enhancer penalty may be added to the charges since the offenses were committed within 1000 feet of a daycare.

Day Pleads “No Contest”

11/10/08 - The former Town of Chester treasurer suspected of withholding her own property taxes from the town has pled no contest to a charge of misconduct in office. Thirty-eight-year-old Rebecca Day, of Waupun, was in Dodge County court last Friday. Four other charges were read into the record and dismissed. An accounting firm discovered an impropriety in the town’s finances. Day was accused of recording property taxes for her residence without actually making a payment. It happened each year between 2002 and 2006. A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for February 5th. (KFIZ)

Recount Will Cost Taxpayers about $1,000

11/10/08 - Officials in Dodge County say a recount for the 18th State Senate seat will cost taxpayers around $1000. First a petition has to be filed with the state’s Government Accountability Board, which would then notify the Clerk’s office’s in Dodge, Fond du Lac and Winnebago Counties, which comprise the district. Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson says she and the other two members of the County Board of canvassers would have to go over the ballots again, at a cost of less than $1000. Gibson says it will be time consuming, though. When the Board met last Thursday to canvass the vote candidates Randy Hopper and Jessica King each gained some ground. The latest figures show Hopper won by 181 votes.

Gibson Not Surprised about Van Hollen Appeal

11/10/08 - Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson says she is not surprised to hear that the Attorney General is appealing the decision to dismiss his lawsuit against the Government Accountability Board. A Dane County judge last month threw out the lawsuit, which sought to force the GAB to verify voter registration information dating back to January of 2006. The judge ruled Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen (right) and the state Republican Party didn't have the standing to file the lawsuit. Van Hollen is appealing that decision, because he says state agencies need to follow the law. He contends the Help America Vote Act requires the registration checks. Gibson says it’s too early to determine what effect it will have on Dodge County. Gibson says even after the initial threat to crosscheck the state’s voter registration data with drivers license records, it was unclear exactly what the role of local county clerks offices would have. The Attorney General says he waited to file the appeal because there was no possibility for relief before the election.

Horicon Woman Facing Arson Charges

11/10/08 - A 33-year-old Horicon woman, diagnosed with mental problems, is facing arson charges for allegedly starting a fire at her apartment complex. According to the criminal complaint Jamie Allen is accused of using a lighter to set fire to a curtain and some clothes. Allen allegedly laughed when authorities asked if she was concerned about hurting other people in the apartment complex saying, “figured they’d get out before their place burned down.” A competency hearing is scheduled for next month. The fire caused $12,000 to $15,000 in damage. (KFIZ)

Waupun & Columbus Earn State Titles

11/10/08 - Two area teams earned state championships over the weekend. The Columbus boy’s soccer team earned their first trophy by beating Chippewa Falls McDonell-Eau Claire Regis 3-2 in the Division 3 title game Saturday. The Cardinals got 2 goals from senior Jeff Shultz and another from Junior Jordan Roberts. Near Green Bay, the Waupun girl’s volleyball team picked up their 11th state title in the last 16 years when they beat Waukesha Catholic Memorial in the Division 2 finals. Their 11 championships in girl’s volleyball are the most of any school in the WIAA.
