Man in Custody after Making Threats

11/6/08 - Dodge County authorities have a man in custody this morning for allegedly making threats to fellow workers at a factory during the overnight hours. The Sheriff’s Department says the man was arrested for threatening statements made to his co-workers at the Quad Graphics factory in Lomira. He has also continued to make threats while in custody. Officials say they are still gathering information on the incident and did not release a possible motive for the threats. The man is being held without bail at the Dodge County Detention Facility.

Man Dies after Fall

11/6/08 - A worker from Oconomowoc Lake died from a head injury, after he fell 10-feet from a ladder. An autopsy was performed yesterday on 60-year-old Sidney Zimmerman. He was working at Silgan Containers in Oconomowoc on Tuesday when the accident happened. Police Chief David Beguhn said other employees were in the area – but they did not see the mishap, or what might have caused it. An investigation into the accident continues.

Authorities Search Burglary Suspect’s Car

11/6/08 - Dodge County authorities executed a search warrant early yesterday on a car belonging to the man suspected in a number of daytime burglaries in the area. The search of 46-year-old Oscar Jasper’s vehicle turned up several items that police say will tie Jasper to numerous burglaries in Dodge County, as well three in Washington County. Jasper was taken into custody last Friday at the Grandview Motel in Beaver Dam. Detectives will spend the next several days contacting victims and asking them to come and identify their property. Jasper is currently being held on probation violations as well as a charge of Felon in possession of a firearm. Despite the arrest of a number of suspected burglars, authorities are reminding the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Local Legislators Seek to Retain Leadership Positions

11/6/08 - Wisconsin senators will meet today to hash over Tuesday’s elections, and pick their leaders for the next session, which could include a couple of area legislators. Republican Scott Fitzgerald of Juneau, who held the Senates minority leader’s post in the last session, could be elected back to that position. Weston Democrat Russ Decker is expected to be re-elected as the Senate’s Majority Leader. Meanwhile, as Democrats are scrambling for leadership posts in the Assembly after gaining a majority on Tuesday, current Republican Majority Leader Jeff Fitzgerald of Horicon is expected to be a candidate for the minority leaders post in the next session. Milwaukee Democrats Jon Richards, Fred Kessler, and Pedro Colon are all trying to become the Assembly’s new speaker along with Janesville Democrat Mike Sheridan. Both parties in the Assembly will choose its leaders next week.

King to Ask for Recount in Senate District 20

11/6/08 - An Oshkosh Democrat who lost a state Senate election by three-tenths-of-one-percent says she’ll ask for a recount. Tuesday night’s tally had Jessica King losing to Fond du Lac Republican Randy Hopper by 180 votes with over 83-thousand cast. Canvassing boards in Winnebago, Fond du Lac, and Dodge counties have until tomorrow to certify their results. King can then ask for the recount after that. Control of the Senate would not be affected. Even if Hopper wins, the Democrats would still have a one-vote majority. King, a member of the Oshkosh City Council, was running for the Senate seat vacated when Republican Carol Roessler took a job in Governor Jim Doyle’s administration.

Voter Turnout High in Beaver Dam

11/6/08 - While the voter turnout in Dodge County was less than expected, it was pretty high in Beaver Dam. Officials say nearly 84% of registered voters in the city cast a ballot in Tuesday’s election. There are just over 8700 registered voters in Beaver Dam and 7318 votes were cast. Of course, at this point there is no way of determining how many new voters registered, that information is required to be tabulated within 30 days of the election. Four years ago, 1500 voters registered on Election Day. As far as the returns are concerned, unlike Dodge County which favored Republican McCain, Beaver Dam sided with Barack Obama. City officials say Obama received 4387 votes, or 61%, while McCain secured 2821, or 39% of the vote.

Doyle Looking Forward to Dealing with New State Legislature

11/6/08 - Now that Democrats run the entire state Legislature, Governor Jim Doyle says he hopes to get things he couldn’t get in the last session – like mandatory insurance coverage for autism, and a rating system for child care providers. Voters stripped Republicans of their power in the Assembly on Tuesday, giving Democrats the majority in both houses and the governor’s office for the first time in 22 years. Doyle promised to keep holding the line on sales-and-income taxes. But he expects a new tax on hospitals to finally pass, since it would bring in more federal Medicaid funds. Doyle also said it will be easier to adopt a statewide public indoor smoking ban. But we could also see internal struggles within the majority – mainly because a looming deficit in the next budget assures that they won’t get everything they want. Republicans also say the deficits could delay steps to fight climate change. Senate Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald says Democrats will quote, “eat their own in the first six months.”

Highway P to Open by End of November

11/6/08 - Highway P in Fox Lake is expected to be back open to traffic by the end of the month. It has been closed since June 14th to replace the culvert that was washed out during the flooding. City Administrator Bill Petracek says the construction company is in the process of diverting Mill Creek so they can place the culvert, which is the main part of the project. Petracek says they hope to have Highway P open by November 30th. Last night the city council approved borrowing up to $300,000 for the project. Petracek says those funds are needed until a couple different federal entities resolve who is responsible to pay for the repairs. Though officials are hopeful the road will be open to traffic later this month the project won’t be completely finished until lay more asphalt next spring.

Nehls Upset with County Budget

11/6/08 - Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls told us on WBEV’s Community Comment this week that his department is spread too thin, and he criticized the Finance Committee for rejecting funds for a detective’s position. The Sheriff’s Department had asked for an increase of $1.13 million in the 2009 budget, but got less than half. Nehls countered by asking for $110,000 to fund the detective’s position, but the Finance Committee denied it. Nehls says the funding has a direct effect on public safety. Plus, he says he will return a half million dollars in unused levy from the current budget. Board Chairman Kottke will be our guest on Community Comment next Monday.

11/6/08 - Phone users in the 7-1-5 and 9-2-0 area codes may run out of numbers in the next two or three years. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission will discuss what to do about the impending problem at a meeting today. The 7-1-5 area code could be out of numbers by the middle of the year 2010, with the 9-2-0 area code facing the same problem a year after that. The area codes could be split and a new area code added -- or, new area codes could be added within the existing areas in northern and southeastern Wisconsin.
