Columbus Wins State Title

11/8/08 - The third time was the charm for the Columbus boy’s soccer team. The Cardinals won the Division 3 title Saturday morning by beating Chippewa Fall McDonell-Eau Claire Regis 3-2 in Milwaukee. McDonell-Regis took the early lead but Columbus then scored three unanswered goals that proved to be enough to get them the win. Senior Jeff Shultz had two goals and Junior Jordan Roberts had the other Cardinal goal. This was the third straight trip to state for Columbus. The Cardinals finish the season with a record of 21-5-2.
The Cost of a Recount

11/08/08 - A recount of the vote for the 18th State Senate seat will add some costs for the county clerk offices in the district. First a petition has to be filed with the state’s Government Accountability Board, which would then notify the Clerk’s office’s in Dodge, Fond du Lac and Winnebago Counties. Dodge County Clerk Karen Gibson says she and the other two members of the County Board of canvassers would have to go over the ballots again. Gibson says it will cost around $1000 and a lot of additional time. When the Board met Thursday to canvass the vote candidates Randy Hopper and Jessica King each gained a few more votes. Hopper won by 180 votes.

AG Presses On With GAB Lawsuit

11/08/08 - The Attorney General is appealing the decision to dismiss his lawsuit against the Government Accountability Board. A Dane County judge last month threw out the lawsuit, which sought to force the GAB to verify voter registration information dating back to January of 2006. The judge ruled Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen and state Republican Party didn't have the standing to file the lawsuit. Van Hollen is appealing that decision, because he says state agencies need to follow the law. He contends the Help America Vote Act requires the registration checks. The Attorney General says he waited to file the appeal because there was no possibility for relief before the election. However, he says it's still important because there will be future elections.

Obama Targeted

11/08/08 - Milwaukee police want to know who is responsible. A picture of President-elect Barack Obama was found on a table in a district police station. It had been defaced, with a bullet drawn near Obama's head. Police Chief Edward Flynn says this isn't considered to be a credible threat to Obama, but the Secret Service was notified. The altered picture was found Thursday. The incident is the subject of an internal investigation.

Horicon Woman Charged in Apartment Fire

11/08/08 - A Horicon woman has been charged with Arson of Building following an apartment complex fire on Tuesday night. Jamie R. Allen is accused of setting the fire in her unit on the 900 block of Division Street. According to the criminal complaint, the 33-year-old admitted to using a lighter to ignite a curtain in the doorway of her bedroom and clothes in her closet. She then locked the door so that the fire could not be extinguished, but removed her cat and birds. Allen says she has been diagnosed as a Schizoaffective and a Manic Depressant. Allen also indicated that her caseworker is trying to brainwash her. When questioned, she told investigators that she is confused and may not know the difference between right and wrong. She said she wanted to (quote) “see what she could get away with and blow up the whole world…go to Iraq and Iran and blow it all up.” When asked about the safety of other people in the building, she reportedly laughed and said that she (quote) “figured they’d get out before their place burned down.” There were no injuries but the fire resulted in $12 to $15,000 in damage. Allen has a Competency Hearing scheduled for December 17. If convicted, she faces up to 40 years in prison.

Gas Down

11/08/08 - Gas has dropped a $1.77 since mid-September and that pattern could continue. It’s down another seven cents in Beaver Dam to $2.21 at some filling stations. The AAA says prices are not done falling yet. Spokesperson Larry Kamholz says they expect the cost to continue to fall until the end of the year. He says if the pricing trends continue we could see gas at or maybe below $2. Right now the lowest price in the Midwest region is in the Twin Cities where gas can be found at $1.99. Our area isn’t that low yet. In Fond du Lac it is as low as $2.19, while $2.23 in Waupun. The low price in the state is 2.09 in Algoma. The high price is in Drummond at $2.45.

New Computer System in Wisconsin

11/08/08 - The state of Wisconsin is ready to start using its new computer billing system Monday. When it's up and running, the state's 900-thousand Medicaid recipients won't use their Social Security number for identification any more. The original target date was last month, but that was put off to let health care providers get ready. Those Medicaid recipients will start receiving letters next week with their new identifiers. Last January a state contractor mailed more than a quarter-million brochures to those people with their Social Security numbers visible.

Retail Sales Plummet

11/08/08 - The nation’s retail stores just ended their worst month in 35 years. Keri Spanbauer, an equity analyst in Appleton, called it painful. Stores open for at least a year had an average sales drop of one-half-of-one-percent in October. And without Wal-Mart’s “save money-live better” campaign, the firm of Retail Metrics said the national drop would have been three-and-a-half percent. Bon-Ton – the parent company of a number of Wisconsin department stores including Herberger’s in Beaver Dam - had an 11-percent sales drop. Kohl’s Department Stores, based in Menomonee Falls, had a nine-percent drop in its same-store sales – more than the six-and-two-thirds percent analysts had predicted for October. Wal-Mart said its customers saw a widening price gap with competitors. And yesterday, the chain said it would drop prices in all categories, to try and save customers 200-million dollars in the Christmas shopping season.
